Am I doing it wrong?

Have a question after setting up about 9 times so far I have had a few like 6 guys tell me I am setting up wrong

What I do is pull into the site or back in. Then I get my wheel chock's out and put one on each side of the trailer. Then I lower the front jacks and unhitch the 5th wheel. Pull the truck out then I hit the 6 point level-up let it do its thing. Then I install the X-Chock's on each side then power/water.

I keep being told not to use the wheel chock's just use the X-Chock's just install them real tight and then hit the level-up.

Well one day I did try it and the X-Chock's came out

So am I wrong on what I am doing ?

Ron.

You do it the same way I do each and every time. Answer, NO you're not doing wrong. I don't do the x chocks until I'm level and slides are out. Happy Camping, Sam

I have always gotten close to level before I let the slides out.

1. Chock the trailer, yeah fifth wheels can roll down a hill.....
2. unhitch the truck you might crush the truck bed if the level up is "aggressive"
3. plug in the electric (that way you have added power for the level up system) and start A/C if needed
4. Level up
5. x chocks (if you put them in before the slides there's easier access
6. open slides
7. water, sewer and cable/satellite lines

Really, except for #1 and #2 (which I'd recommend ALWAYS) the rest are a matter of personal preference. I would plug in shore power before using a lot of battery juice on leveling and opening slides, but that's also a preference.

If you're dry camping, you might want to park the truck alongside the RV and reconnect the 7 way plug and leave the truck running while leveling and opening the slides to conserve some battery power.

Agree, you are doing it correctly. I never put my x-chocks in until the unit is level and the stabilizers are down. If you have one of the 5th wheel suspension shock reducing (equalizer) systems the distance between tire will move slightly during the leveling process, hence why your x-chocks feel our the one time you followed the other suggestions.

Keep doing what your ding! Have fun!!!

Same here, except I plug in power first because it's usually 100 degrees when I'm setting up. After everything is set up, I fine tune the level so the water from the A/C drains to the back of the trailer instead of the front, where it always drips on my head when I'm diggin in the storage area.

your doing it fine. I think there is lots of misconception regarding the x chocks. IMHO they are NOT repeat NOT a substitute for wheel chocks. they ARE a good way to stop trailer rocking by tying the tires together. But they WILL allow a trailer to roll forward reasonably easy and just spit the out the top. On level ground I don't us chocks, but on any incline I use chocks in addition to the x chocks.

Talking Do It Your Way

Hey Ron
The guys that are telling you that your doing it wrong are probably the same guys who sit at the boat launch ramp and wait for someone to launch there camper because it wasn't tied down or launch their boat without having a line tied to it and it floats away. They sit there and clap and cheer. It's your trailer, do it however you want, just remember 5vers can roll down hill and those front jacks have been known to collapse.

NEVER trust an X chock to keep an un-leveled trailer from rolling. If the axles twist enough they will loosen. I set four of the plastic chocks, two each side front and back of the tires!

You are doing the Safe Way.

I agree with the above poster on how they set-up also. The only thing that I do extra is; I will tighten up the X-chocks the next day after the tires have cooled down from towing. I have found that I can always get another full turn the next day on the X-chocks.

A word of caution on retightening the X-Chocks, if you do, make sure you loosen or remove them before you hit the Auto-Retrack button. As the weight of the rig settles back down on the suspension the axles will push together slightly (this assumes you have standard axles and not an IS System) makeing the X-Chock extremely difficult to remove, been there done that.

IMHO they are a great substitute for wheel chocks. Not sure how they can "spit out the top" when one tire is pushing it down. I can and have pulled my fiver over regular chocks.....the tires are firmly locked with the x-chocks.

The only caveat is I don't put them in until the rig is level. I use regular chocks until then.

With the power of todays TVs it's very easy to pull forward and have the X-Chock spit right out onto the ground, been there, done that. And BTW, that's the routine I've gotten into.
