Trailer Brake Controller Settings

Just replaced all 4 electric brakes on my 2010 Laredo 5th wheel. Utilized self-adjusting brake kit from eTrailer.com. replaced just the backing plate, reused the OEM drum

Old brakes, 5.5 gain setting was used on the trucks brake controller. Would stop the truck and trailer when the controller was manually engaged.

New brakes, 9.5 is needed to get them to grab.

I assume the gain is the amount of voltage being sent to the magnet on the drum brakes? Do I have a problem? The brakes DO engage but at a much higher setting than the OEM brakes.

Thoughts?

Self adjusting brakes do still have to be adjusted initially, that is what I would check first. You should be able to hear them just barely rubbing when you spin them.

Were all of the old brakes operational? The new may need to seat themselves, did you turn the old drums or at least deglaze them.

If one or more of the old magnets were defective the workable ones may be more aggressive.

Just my thoughts, BTW I run 9 to 9.5 for my 2017 Laredo.

I have a 34 1/2' tow behind toy hauler that when loaded with bikes and gear, weighs in at approx. 12,400 or so. I have the Ford OEM controller in my truck and it's set at 6.5. I'm not sure if that helps you or not, but it is another reference number in the mix.
