Yes...FAA requires pilot register the drone for commercial use. And the pilot MUST pass a Ground Pilot's Test, which is not something one passes without significant study. My son who is an aerospace engineer has his Ground Pilot license and he studied quite a bit.
Recreational flying though used to require registering your bird, but FAA changed that giving true "hobbyists" an exemption under "Special Rule for Model Aircraft"
So if you are thinking about any commercial work, start studying
