Cloudcroft, NM (free camping on BLM Land)

If your into ATV riding, hunting, horse back riding, and dry camping, I highly recommend Cloudcroft, NM. I've been there half a dozen times in both the summer and winter. I would recommend not staying when the snow starts getting really deep...see photos below.

There is NO fee to camp in any of the designated areas. Its best to be self contained as there is no power, water or even cell phone service. Absolutely magnificent views and a beautiful place to camp. All the trails are marked and there is a free trail map you can download from the BLM website for the NM Area.

I know that area well. Great for elk, deer, and turkey hunting also (if you can get a tag). It's a great area, but be prepared for the drive up. The road from Alamogordo is a pretty good climb and a bit twisty in spots. And yes, the snow can get deep up there. I have had my ATV stuck more than once.
