Battery Maintenance Procedures

One thing I'm not sure you all may know. If you park your RV "up North", a dead battery will freeze. Don't take any chances; put the charged battery in your warm basement over the winter.

Before you disconnect the battery, make sure the +battery terminal cable has RED tape around the cable next to the clamp, and Black (or Green) tape around the cable near the -clamp. AND, put the corresponding tape colors on the battery near the terminals. And yes, some electricians prefer Black as Positive (hot) and white as the negative. Tape them with your preferences, even putting black tape on the black batteries. Do not let the battery touch your clothing...

When you are ready to use the RV, Trickle charge it in the spring. Clean the top carefully, and using your automotive turkey baster, and a flashlight, carefully add distilled water to bring the "water" up, and "just touching" the bottom of the filler tube (the reflection of light off the water will change).

And, when installing your fully charged battery, when reattaching the cables, make sure you connect the + terminal to the "correct" +terminal first, and then connect the -cable.

If you hook it up wrong, even if for a sparking second, you will blow the difficult-to-reach fuses on the battery cable's connection to the "inverter" located on the floor behind the 12/120v circuit breaker box inside the RV.

Just to be clear!
Unless you have a residential fridge or have added one yourself you probably do not have an "inverter" (12 volts to 120) but rather a "converter" (120 volts to 12) to power lights, water pump, slides/levelers & charge batteries.
