For those of you that installed the auxiliary tank yourself...did you have any issues with dirt and mud falling into the OEM tank when you cut the rubber fill neck?

Mine was done when new but the area is accessible from below so easily washed off. No excuse for dirt in it.

I did not. Wiped hose clean as I could around the cut point. Went well.

I've done rubber and steel fill necks and like was mentioned, no reason that should happen.

I also wiped the hose with soapy water. It worked fine.

All you really need is 35 or 40 gal. capacity to give you refueling options. Any more is overkill and extra weight. I put in a 37gal. RDS tank w/gravity feed, installed by my local repair shop. All for under $700. I leave the valve open all the time and never have to reach or climb. I fill both tanks and it runs from the aux tank till it's empty, then draws from the main tank. Gauge says full till the aux is empty and then it starts to register normally.
Smooth as silk and not very expensive.

I don't have blind faith in the check valve to operate 100% of the time. Also if you parked on a slope with the check valve higher than the tank vent, guess where that diesel goes?

Overkill in fuel reserves is an individual preference and not the choice of someone else.

If I leave the valve open after a while the computer sees a fault and the fuel gauge goes to empty and range drops to 0. I only have to stop the truck and reset the computer, but that's an enoince.

What's the fault code? If it's venting air back into the aux tank it may be "seeing it" as a missing fuel cap. Just a guess.

From the reading I have done ( haven't had the chance to go long haul yet) , the brains does not see the fuel guage come off of full for an out of spec time range, it then assumes a fault and defaults to empty. Cycling key power resets it. This is with the chevs, not sure about others.
Not sure I can get there with my old bladder any more, carrying an extra 30 gals.

Yes that's what happened to me. No fault code just puts the fuel gauge to empty. That's why I installed a fuel valve and switch. No problem since then.

The Ford system doesn't have a reaction to the added fuel. It just reads full until the auxiliary tank is empty. And ours has never leaked, vent or fill cap. I use a check valve similar to this on the end of the vent hose:

This has been my experience also, never a leak and on my third truck. My understanding is that the vent fitting is required to have a built in check valve to prevent a fuel spill in the case of a truck rollover.

I do also understand that GM trucks have issues with fuel gage readings but it's minor and doesn't affect transfer operation.

The OP was looking for and aux fuel tank on a budget. I merely offered my set up as a possible solution for him, not what everyone should do. To each his own for sure.

I have the RDS 95 gal fuel tank and tool box combo. It gravity feeds directly into my regular diesel tank. So no fooling around with it. The size sticks above the bed rails but leaves clearance on the sides. Enough for an additional 5 gal water tank and 5 gal regular gas tank.

I can easily drive 2200+ miles without stopping for fuel w/o trailer about 1200+ miles with trailer. Allows me to avoid stopping for fuel in states like CA, or PA and minimize stops in Can/Mex.

The cost was about $1,100 new. I installed it myself including the gravity feed. It's DOT approved. No fear of leaks.

That's over 700 lbs of load capacity for that amount of fuel.

I don't particularly want a tool box / tank but only the tank and would like to be able to turn on fuel without hopping up in the bed (too short to reach down at bed level for a manual drain valve. As noted, I am poor and can't afford fancy; anyone have recommendations how to not bust the budget... or break my neck crawling up in the bed with the 5ver hooked up? PS: Already have an in-bed swing out side case to carry what is needed hence no need for the tool box.
I have a notched piece of PVC to turn my gravity feed on or off. Also have a 3 step stool incase of short body needs to get closer.
