Diesel fuel tax is the culprit. And as the states require more taxes to maintain the roads, the price will go up. The strange thing about it, it is cheaper to produce diesel. However, it is claimed that since the heavy trucks use it, the tax needs to be higher to maintain the roads.

Per the following link it looks like no need to worry about a spike in Diesel prices due to the new IMO rule taking effect on 1/1/2020.

Ahem....purely driven by demand. Historically there has been a big export market. Some folks say China buys a lot, heck if I know. May be Mexico buying it because they can't seem to keep their refineries on line.
What I do know is when the sulfur content dropped because of government regulations, we (Shell) had to build a new unit to meet the regs. One would think that would be paid for by now. One would think.
They will charge all they can get for it.
Just like you would.
$2.69 here.

I've been paying $3.09 at my local Rhode Island "Fill'er up" for about 2 years now. He guarantees fresh and -20 degree winter grade, when appropriate. He guarantees to tow you in to his super heated garage for a defrost and filter change free of charge if you have a gel problem. Never happened yet, and probably won't .... He runs a fleet of 12 of his own diesel Fuel Oil Trucks from the same pump, so I'm sure it'll not be a problem!

Fortunately, we're 5 miles from the RI/CT border. I haven't bought so much as a thimble full of diesel in CT in 30 years. In addition to a sales tax on diesel, there is a 9 cent per gallon surcharge on diesel in CT to make up for the 18's that blow thru without fueling up (its only 140 miles from RI to NJ, the local truckers suck it up for road repairs)! RI=$3.09 // CT= $3.29+/-, no thanks! Same for the wife's Explorer, RI $2.79 // CT $2.90 +/-...!

p.s Liquor is cheaper in RI too! HIC!

Good Luck,

Correction

In (2007) actually the initial sulfur reduction happened in 1993, California implemented a requirement for low sulfur diesel. Diesel prices went way up, and the new fuel wreaked havoc on older fuel systems, costing diesel owners thousands of dollars in repair costs.

$2.70-$2.80 range in South Florida. Some stations in some areas higher....even seen a low traffic station $3.10 which is crazy. Who would pay premium for Diesel that's been sitting around for long? Lol
Lucky we have an interstate station that's super busy but not expensive and one other that's busy with ranch owners. Cheaper and high rotation of supply fuel

The article cites the International Maritime Organization (IMO) rule that came into effect on Jan 1, 2020. The rule reduces SOx emissions from fuel used in ocean carriers by limiting its sulphur content of 0.5 wt% and theoretically should drive diesel prices up since ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) or No. 2 diesel is one of the diluents used to to reduce maritime fuel sulfur content and that will shift ULSD supply away from the road transportation market. However, expect road ULSD prices to continue to be tied to supply and demand.

That was expected to greatly increase demand and drive prices up. But didn't I hear there was a moratorium on implementing that rule?
Price here in GA is $2.74, about the same last week in SC.
All I know is my Exxon stock is at a 5 year low and it tends to somewhat follow the pump prices. Would seem any anticipated huge increase in demand would drive that up.

I live in a very rural area. Nearest filling station is about 7 miles away on FM471 coming out of San Antonio and buy fuel at the Valero (or whatever it is called today). Was $2.58 a gallon for diesel yesterday. Went by a Neighborhood Walmart on the way home from town yesterday and it was $2.45 @ gallon. Regular gas is about $2 a gallon at most stations.

Well got a tank at Indian Casino on the way to the Oregon Coast yesterday for $3.09 minus a 40 cent Fred Meyer fuel discount (Shell).

I saw similar prices to goducks when we were in Cannon Beach last weekend. Sitting around $3.29/gal for diesel right now in Washington state.
