I was going to say the same thing. When I hear folks claim particularly good fuel economy, I'm often suspicious they're quoting the display and not calculating/averaging based on consumption and distance.

With my 5.9L CTD I "can" get 17-18 mpg highway if I drive reasonable speeds. The display shows 21-23 mpg. Around town, short trips without getting up to temp, and lots of stop lights, I get 10-12 mpg with the display showing 14-16 mpg. I haven't pulled the 5er far enough to get a good number, but got 10-12 mpg with our last trailer.

I use http://www.fuelly.com to track fuel mileage and compare my truck to others. This is about the best site I've found to gather data on real world fuel consumption, especially if you find folks that include notes.

I too hand calculate my mileage and the meter on the truck seldom matches my calculations. I am always 1.5 to 3.0 mpg lower. I used to think when first got the truck it would average out at some point. Doesn't seem to be the case. Pulling trailer with my 6.4 2008 Ford I get High 8's to low 11mpg depending on speed terrain and wind. When I am empty which is not often I run between 16-18 mpg. My truck really doesn't see much highway use unless its pulling.

I have gotten 18 empty but average 15-17 highway. We just got back from a 6 week trip to Florida and averaged 10-11 towing the TT.
