New member from California

Hello,
My Wife & I are excited for the purchase of our 3rd RV 2021 Cougar 316rls. Does anyone happen to know how to track the status of a new build from the keystone factory?? I do have the vin number of our unit but can’t seem to get any updates from our dealer or a response from the factory. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum: wlcm:

Congrats on your new purchase. Unfortunately I’m not aware of any RV maker that has a way for the public to track the building/delivery of their unit. It will be a nice surprise when the dealer calls and says it has arrived. Make sure you do a complete inspection before signing the papers.

Nothing specific to fivers. What hitch are you using?

And what are you towing it with?
It's nearly 36' long 12000lb GVWR which equals 2700lbs of pin weight (average 23% of GVWR) + the weight of the hitch. Check the yellow/white tag on the drivers door jamb for your trucks payload then subtract at least 2800lbs. Whatever is left of your payload is what you can add safely in people, pets, & other stuff in the truck.

2021 F250 with tow package. Weight has obviously already been factored in thanks for the concern

If your 2021 F250 with tow package is a diesel truck, you're going to be at/over the payload and the 10K GVW with that trailer. If it's a 6.2L gas engine truck, depending on the trim level, you "could be under payload" or ?????

If diesel, I'd run the numbers again using "real world, not brochure" pin weights. A 12,300 GVW fifth wheel (without a washer/dryer in the front cap) will be pushing 2500 pounds on the pin, plus your other cargo, the hitch and all passengers in the truck. I've got a F250 diesel and a "significantly smaller fifth wheel" and it's a hassle on every trip, trying to stay under payload. I've resorted to leaving things at home and we NEVER take extra passengers with us on trips.

Do you actually understand that GVWR means that you would physically have to have all of your holding tanks full to achieve that weight along with your gear and people..I don’t know about you but I don’t travel with my crap tank, fresh water tank and grey full of water LOL

You live in Calif. CHP can pull you over and weigh your truck at any time. If your rear axle weighs over the rating, they can and will make you unhook right there. Then your subject to impound/tow fees. And you can’t get it back until you get a truck rated for the weights. Also are you aware of the endorsement you need in your license?

I try not to travel with any waste water either, but I have been forced to haul full waste tanks. I’m not trying to rain on your parade, just stating what I know and have first hand knowledge of.

I am not CHP. Endorsement- feel free to look it up. Just trying to give you a heads up, it’s your choice what you do with the information.

No it wasn't obvious or I wouldn't have mentioned it.
A 3/4 of any brand truck doesn't necessarily mean you're good on all the weights hauling large 5th wheels.
No need to take offense! Was only asking to make you aware & a concern for you & your families safety.
There have been countless come on here that are absolutely certain they have more than enough truck only to find the dealer lied to them big time, then they learn where to find & how to calculate the numbers.

It’s nothing personal ... I had a 3/4 ton diesel and the same trailer basically ...it doesn’t matter at all if you have the tanks full or empty. That means nothing..me and my wife and empty tanks and normal load of camping gear and I was lmost 1000 over gvwr... I just bought a 3500 dually to correct that imbalance

Oh and congratulations on the purchase... really a bunch of nice people on the site.. everyone is just making sure your aware of the weight considerations...if this was an airplane forum they would be advising not to overload based on experience of the forum

And with all due respect I don’t think you realize what gvwr means ...it’s the dry weight of the trailer when manufactured PLUS EVERYTHING else you put in it...it could be full tanks and nothing else or empty tanks and a trailer full of frozen turkeys or anything else that you put in it.. when you put it on the scales then that can’t weigh more then the gvwr..you could have empty tanks and 2000 lbs of stuff in the basement storage( grills ,tools etc and a pantry full of food and clothes...it’s the total the trailer can ever weigh no matter what... The gvwr of the truck is what everyone was talking about that you may exceed.

I’m only saying because I just went through this nightmare ..any way good luck
