We traveled for a couple of years with our English Mastiff (165#) and Great Dane (110#), but lost them both earlier this year. The Dane while on the road camping. Now we have to Laberdanes that will be 6 months old on Nov 30th. The male is already over 80#. For us, the dogs are part of the fun of camping.

Sorry to hear about the Dane, that must have been hard. We've found that having the dog along also invites people to have a conversation. One park we were in we were walking along and as a couple was approaching one of them said "that must be Max we were told about him" We then stood and talked for a bit.

It was very tough. We were broke down on the side of the road 90 miles outside Denver. She got out of the truck, leaned up against me and just dropped and she was gone. DW and I just sat on the side of the road and cried. We had lost the Mastiff 3 weeks earlier. Both were around 10, so for big dogs they had a long life.

We travel with all four of ours. They have harnesses for the back seat and usually have their heads out the window.

Sorry for your loss. Never easy, take comfort in the fact that you gave them the best life a dog could have wanted.

More pets
We travel because of our dogs. We have 4 Shetland Sheepdogs who compete in agility, herding, obedience and conformation. We have crates in the back seat of the truck and in the trailer. We take them to shows as well as vacations. Last year it was 6 weeks on the Texas coast and two weeks on the Oregon coast. Since they need to stay in shape, we practice obedience and agility whenever we stay for a few days. Folks love to watch, and the dogs love to perform. We have found that even if a campground has a limit on pets, they are willing to allow these well behaved show dogs. One place even used their practice to advertise on their website.

Ever notice that family dogs aren’t just called mutts or Heinz 57 any more? Now if Fido jumps the fence and performs the horizontal mambo with Fifi the result is made up into some name like doxiedoodle rather than mutt.

We travel with to rescue dogs. They are actually litter mates though they don’t look alike. We started taking them with us when they we’re about 6 months old and love to go. When they see us getting the trailer ready they follow us everywhere in fear they will be left. We pull our 31 ft Premier with f250 and put their beds on the floor in the back seat. As soon as we start to move they lay dow and don’t get up until we stop. They’re super travelers.

How do you suppose all the different breeds developed over time? The different Poodle crosses generally are planned not accidental. Although I do have to wonder the why on some.

Beautiful! We’ve had four shelters; been six years without one. Someday...

We've had several dogs before, mostly mutts. Only 1 ever went camping with us when we were tent campers. Fast forward to now, we have one rescue that can't live without my wife. She is our first rescue, but our second Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. She's getting used to the RV finally and she travels very well. But sadly our days with her are very numbered. She was bred out so bad, her heart is failing rapidly. Medicine has kept her around an additional 2 years but we are starting to lose the battle.
We're planning on being longtimers in under 2 years, so we might wait before we get another. It would be so unfair to leave a new dog behind while we are sightseeing around this country. At least for a little while. Then I think we'll be itching for another Cavalier.
We've had several breeds before, but we have been ruined by these dogs and their temperament. Once it's time for another dog, at least 1 will be a Cavalier.

Our babies
We have Gus (5 yr old full size Australian shepherd - 65 lbs) and Jimmy (3 yr old Texas Heeler 50 lbs). Gus is my big ol’ bear and Jimmy is my sweet wolf. They love to play and chase balls. We recently lost 15 yr old Fern (Aussie spaniel mix). We love our dogs!

We travel with 3 cats. They hate riding in the truck, we have 3 big dog crates for traveling while insde the truck, but once they get into the trailer and we're all settled in they're fine. Every time we go out they get a little better. I used to have someone come to our house to take care of them, but they weren't happy about that either, so coming with us it is!

Absolutely gorgeous Shelties! The sable is just like our Riley, we also have a mahogany sable & white - Sadie. We never leave home without them, they would not allow it. If I ask if they want to go camping - they run out to the trailer and stand at the door and bark (they are very vocal) They've got to be the sweetest and most devoted dogs I've ever owned - and boy do they like to herd....

Been a rough year as well. We traveled everywhere with our pups. Camped, hiked, loved them.
We started 2020 with 5, but now down to 2. The hardest one was my Redbone. Have spent everyday of the 11 years, since picking him from the shelter, together.
He’d go to work with everyday. Back when I ran heavy equipment, he’d ride in the dump truck, backhoes, and loaders. My fishing buddy as well.
Just the best dog I’ve ever had, really my best friend, sorry to my wife.
Here are the 3 we lost, Copper, Brandy and Mr. Simms
