Monuments

Burlington, VT

Basically these pictures are from my monuments picture files.

Battery Park is right in down town Burlington. It is on a knoll overlooking Lake Champlain.

Ferry boats cross the lake to ports in NY. The park is loaded with artifacts and monuments. During our RVing travels I took pictures of monuments wherever I found them.

That's cool. I try to stop and read them if I can safely get off the road.
I'm pretty involved in our County Historical Commission and we put up several markers a year. There is usually a lot of research to get the state approval.

The St. Lawrence River & Thousand Islands

One year while traveling in up-state NY we took the scenic NY roads 12 & 37 along the St. Lawrence River. At a pull-out on NY12 we found these placards.

People that don't know much about the Mormons and their pioneering and pilgrimage travels, surely don't know this wonderful story of survival.

I'll bet someone from Germantown knows where this one is.

Who would of thought, "back in the day" - when Marlo had a sitcom - I'd someday have a St. Jude supported pace maker?

Cal, just as a person, I would like to tell you how much I appreciate you sharing your pictures and adventures. It is a delightful, welcome change from all the worries and struggles we are facing each day. It redirects our thinking back to the wonderful hobby we all share - RVing, and all the joys and adventures it can bring. And, soon we will be able to get back out there and "go places" again! Thank you.

I share Danny's words of appreciation.

Here's the "first bridge over the Mississippi River and the "monument to its origin".

Tuscaloosa, AL

One time while traveling south on US-23 it took us through downtown Tuscaloosa, AL. Driving by a mall we spotted this memorial and went back to see what it was all about. I had served in VA-174 from 1966 – 1970. It was a shore duty training squadron and was never assigned to the USS Eisenhower; but I sort of overlooked that because of the monuments’ message.

NOTE: "As of 1 August 1971, VA-174 had trained 535 pilots, 48 maintenance officers and 4815 enlisted maintenance personnel. VA-174 was the largest aviation squadron in the U.S. Navy. Commander John McCain was the Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of VA-174 in the mid-1970s." (From Wikipedia)

Graceland

I joined the USN on Elvis Presley's 22nd birthday.

When he died I was aboard the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) off the coast of NC. I was a Chief Petty Officer working the flight deck as a maintenance coordinator for Navy Fighter Squadron 41 (F14A aircraft).

During a tour of Graceland I took this picture.

John L. Lewis. Hardly any of today’s youngsters know the name or anything about him. In his day his name was on a level with Hoffa. He was a powerful labor union president and government lobbyist.

These were on display in Beckley, WV, on the property of the Exhibition Coal Mine campground.
