Ken,
Isn't that called, "cutting off your nose to spite your face" or "Shoot yourself in the foot trying to play like a quick-draw expert" ?????

Shutdown
Yes I agree, as a DOD employee on Furlough it really does not matter to much because I can't afford to travel. Maybe I should apply for some of those free entitlements, whoops I mean HANDOUTS since my taxes pay for them. What BS is this anyway. Really irritates me...

They got your attention.
The White House has closed all the parks first just to get the attention of the public; and they obviously have done that. All the worker bees will get their pay retroactive- it happens every time.
It really galls me to be so manipulated by our elected officials - especially our CO (community organizer).

I really have to laugh about the non-essential workers being sent home. If they are non-essential, what are they doing on the payroll to begin with? Even at that, the furloughed government workers will go back to work and receive all of their pay retroactive, thus being paid for work not done, but then.....

If any of the incumbent politicians are still in office after the 2014 elections, there is something seriously wrong with the American people.

It's time for the working citizens of the U.S.A. to wake up and smell the coffee. The siting members of congress from both sides of the isle and the current administration are not working in the interest of this country. Instead they are self-serving and petty. Prostituting themselves to the highest bidder rather than serving the people. Buying votes to keep themselves in office with your wages, giving the money you earn to people who don't work in exchange for their vote.
The entire congress and current administration should be held accountable, just as you or I would be if we preformed our appointed tasks as poorly as they have. I know my boss would have never put up with me acting like they do. It's time to let them know who works for whom.

We need to kick all the incumbents out and replace them with moderates who are willing to make the necessary compromises to prevent the country from spiraling into turmoil.
We also need to amend the Constitution to establish a single term limit of four years for all Presidents, Senators, and Representatives---with no possibility of re-election---so that this never happens again.

While not a citizen of your country, I think I have a pretty good understanding of and appreciation for the feelings and the frustrations that many of you have expressed here on the forum concerning the shutdown and its effects on the public. If the same thing were to happen here in Canada, I am sure that I would be feeling just as upset and angry as many of you are.
Having said that, I am also aware that we need to be mindful of the forum policy regarding politics and political statements.
I would guess that both Mike's (Javi) and Bob's posts above express very well the feelings that many of you have and their posts might serve as a summary and perhaps a conclusion of the views held by many forum members.

Kudos to them if you ask me. Someone clearly would have ended up getting hurt if not killed along the roadway, and then some moron would start new propaganda about that...

We were victims of the '95 shutdown. We had reservations to spend Christmas Eve in Yellowstone and found out driving between Denver and Cheyenne that they were closing national parks. Arizona managed to get Grand Canyon open with funding and a "hold harmless" to the feds. Wyoming tried, but their state constitution would not allow the hold harmless. We went on to Jackson and hoped they would work something out. We had our 14 year old daughter with us and was trying to find things to do while waiting. Found a dog sledding outfitter in the Bridger-Teton NF and called to see if he was operating. He said they would play "heck" closing the entire NF, and he would operate until someone with a gun showed up and ordered him closed.
And yes, the workers all received back pay. That was the most frustrating part of it all I believe. We wound up having a blast snowmobiling in a NF outside Ten Sleep, WY.

This is certainly not intended to slight our Canadian neighbors. I would, however, prefer that it be "facing" Metropolitan DC. There's a few there who need to see themselves as the rest of the world views them.... LOL

Those with a brain can easily understand whats going on here. I am not upset about the shutdown at all, I am upset that politicians chose to use it for propaganda purposes and try to make the public in flyover country suffer over it. The NPS, Park police, and some park staff have used this opportunity to show their rear end and side with the political party machine and to me that is unforgiveable. The party machine has done a nice job of morphing the attention away from the actual issue that led to the shutdown and with media complicity turned it into something it was not. I have no respect for any of them.

First .... Let me say that I agree with most of what has been said here. This shutdown affects all of us, but this is not the place to discuss it. Since it's start politics as been a big no-no on this forum and this is probably one reason for it's success. After four pages, I think we have had our opportunity to vent and before any discussions get heated I am closing this thread. I hope you all can understand my reasons even if you disagree, Hank
.....Perhaps after this lunacy has ended some of you can keep us informed of the reopening of the parks ... Thanks
