If it is things you can schedule stuff ahead of time, ie predictable bills, just do that. Otherwise, you may be able to contact the provider and "prepay" an estimate that will exceed the bill. I am not sure how expensive it would be to use the Internet out of the country.

Access to the internet with a computer is essentially the same as here. If you've got a laptop, it's easy to get online and do what you need to do. If, however, you're planning to use a cell phone/smart phone, then you'll need to contact your carrier to see what they charge for international access and out of country coverage. Make sure the phone rep you talk to knows the phone will be overseas and not that you'll be here making calls overseas... They are two distinctly different "International Plans."

I had another thought also, just leave hubby itinerary, pay bills ahead of time, guestimating the amounts and just go and have fun.........
that might end up just being the option and then no phone fees.......

Jo -
What? You are going to Europe to have fun and leaving poor hubby behind to pay the bills? I hope my wife doesn't see this........

You can also buy a SIM chip over there if it's a GSM phone. That should get you onto a no-contract prepaid plan.

f6fits is correct. Prepaid Sim cards are readily available in the airport or convenience stores. Just swap out the sim card and you should be good to go. Note: New sim card, new phone number. You'll need to call your family and give them your new number while in Europe. When you get back home, put your old sim card in and your back to normal.
If your phone has wi/fi, you can connect this way as well and use a program such as skype for phone calls. Free Wi-fi is faily easy to find in Europe.
