Morning coffee

Ok....I'm spoiled. We camp with full hook ups. We've decided this year to go camping at one of the local race tracks which means we have no hook ups. I'm an early riser, sometimes early as 4 am. and I'd like a morning coffee but don't want to wake everyone with the generator. I don't like instant coffee. Any ideas would be welcome.

Hook a small inverter to your battery or to the tow vehicle. Just make sure it has enough watts to run a coffee maker. Or just boil some water and pour it through the coffee grinds in the filter.
Or just take a quick trip up the road in the truck.

Go to your local camp store and purchase an old fasion drip coffee pot. Put the grinds and the water in the pot the evening before so that it is ready to set on the stove in the morning. Takes about 10 minutes to perk once the water has started to boil. We have been using one for years on our camping trips. IMO it makes better coffee than the drip coffee maker we have at home.

Coleman makes a nice coffee pot that is mostly a Mr. Coffee unit except for the bottom that heats over a propane stove instead the usual electric method. I have the electric unit at home and the propane unit in the trailer. The quality of the coffee is identical from both coffee makers. They run about $40 or so. Any store like Dicks Sporting Goods, Cabelas, Coleman outlets, WalMart or Target should have them.

http://www.coleman.com/product/campi...0#.UY-FcUo4H5k

Here's a pic of the electric Mr. Coffee unit just for comparison. Note that the upper 2/3 is identical. I've swapped parts between the two after washing them both.

We are "die-hard" Community coffee drinkers and the day simply won't start without at least a couple of cups. So, like Steve, we have the Coleman coffee maker and a Bunn electric model in the trailer. When we're hooked up, the Bunn keeps the inside of the RV cool during the morning rituals. When we dry camp, if it's chilly, the Coleman helps warm the inside as it perks away on the stove, if it's too warm, the old Coleman white stove on the picnic table under the awning gets a workout. Either way, we get exactly the kind of coffee we "crave" to help the sun come up to help our coffee "start the day"

I must also confess that we now take our Keurig along. I have to wait until 9 AM (generator hours) to run it, but the result is good, very good. If we still had the Sunline, the Keurig would stay at home as there was just not enough space to carry it or use it in the trailer.

DW makes large quantities of iced tea with it in the morning and then has enough in the fridge for the day.

The Coleman still gets used a lot, too.

I too have a keurig and use it everyday. I thought about hauling it with us since we have room but I love my French press I have. Take a wee bit longer to make compared to the coleman style but the taste is miles apart, hands down I prefer the French press and is a nice treat for my morning camping. If I had more time in the mornings before work I would use it then too but waking up at 1:30 am is bad enough that's where the keurig is king for speed and time.

X 2 on the Keurig, it has really spoiled us. On the road we us a stainless perk pot or a Mellita cone (about $15) Have to have backups for our morning caffeine fix.

The backup to my reserve to my extra to my prime coffee maker is something similar. It's a no-name and cheaply made, but it's survived 30 years or more of bouncing around in the back of a compartment in the trailer. Forgot about that until you mentioned your Melita.

When dry camping, we generally perk our coffee or use the drip method. Once in a while, I get out the Bodum coffee press which is good for a couple of cups of pretty decent coffee.

John - You need to take a look at the way you are making coffee and/or the coffee you use if you rely on it to "help the sun come out". It seems like it isn't doing a very good job the past couple of days!

Fill a thermos before you go to bed. It will still be hot in the morning.

warsw,

For us, part of the morning ritual is filling the house with the smell of coffee as it perks. Simply pouring a "left over cup" from a thermos would seem almost "sacreligeous" around our home LOL

Festus2,

We've added an extra scoup of grounds to the brew, set the pot closer to the window (hoping for the weather to take a hint) and even gone so far as to start pouring the grounds onto the worm bed behind the pole barn. All that seems to have little (actually NO) effect on the weather. Seems Mother Nature is really being a MUTHA this year

Bob,

GLOBAL WARMING???? I'm beginning to think that's all a hoax. The only warming around here comes from a campfire or a fireplace.....

A gas stove or a campfire and http://www.amazon.com/Rapid-Stainles...ef=pd_sim_k_13 <THIS

It's the best coffee in the world to me. I don't drink coffee from drip coffee makers very much but I can kill half a pot out of this sitting around the campsite watching the world come to life. I'm an early riser also so it keeps me in good graces with the wife and daughter doing this outside and not stirring them up when they want to sleep in a little.

If their not up by 8am, that's when the bacon frying starts and that always wakes them with a smile

+1 on the coleman coffee maker. It works like a champ! We don't dry camp too often but when we do, I still need my coffee and perking it takes too long and I hate grounds in it.
Happy camping!

I timed the process once, Mr. Coffee making 12 cups took longer then it did to
perk a pot (also 12 cups), Once it starts 'bubblein' in the top I shut it down
and allow it to 'finish itself' takes about 7 to 9 minutes ... Mr. Coffee takes
about 12 to 15 minutes..... also, it's not good to skip breakfast

Just up the green speckled stove top perk to a stainless steel model. Used it this past weekend for the first time. Worked well, I get up and head out to the ouside kitchen to make it, then sit a relax a bit before the day gets going.

We use a Mellitta with a thermos carafe both at home and on the road. Heat the water however you can - propane stove, campfire, whatever - and smell it brew! No moving parts, no electric, no overflow, easy to clean, etc. There are many styles, both current and retro, but here's a current version ....

Totally agree with you for most instant coffees, but, if you haven't tried it, get yourself some Starbucks Via. It will really surprise you! Anyone else tried it?

yukky maybe or good depending

You could always brew it the night before, just before the generator goes off - a good Thermos will keep it hot for quite some time! Especially if you're getting up THAT early!
