Birdsnest in slippery kingpin

I noticed a bird flying out of kingpin when I was preparing for trip. I connected my hitch and cables it was completely quiet. Drove 300 miles got to destination and all I could hear were baby birds chirping under kingpin. There was a nest of them and I felt bad displacing them from the momma bird, any suggestions on preventing birds from nesting their?

There is going to be one upset mama bird when you bring her young ones home.

Some people use a foam pool noodle to block the cavity, others get more elaborate and construct a wire mesh or wooden "door" over the opening.

For me, I try to use the fifth wheel often enough so they won't find it tempting to nest there. I know they can build a nest almost overnight, but they don't seem to "take up residence" if we camp every weekend during nesting season....

Or, you might find a good "bird adoption agency"

Last spring we also had birds trying to built a nest in the kingpin too. Annoying to being woken up at 4:30-5 in the morning to birds scratching twigs on the metal right under my head. I solved that problem by removing all the nesting material (and holy cow was there a lot of it!). Then, since it was all we had on hand, stuffing a black garbage bag inside another black garbage bag, hooking the tie loops over the umbilical to hold it in place and stuffing/ fluffing that in the kingpin opening. Worked great for when parked and took it out when we moved. Did the same this spring before the birds started their nest and it has worked quite well.

Plus 1 for the nesting. We used duct tape, and cardboard, to seal the void temporarily during nesting season. The noodle sounds good, maybe a beach ball, better?

The additional problem, we had was that s a breeding crazed aggressive male Robin, attacking my built in back-up mirror on the front of our Alpine rig .Slobber on the mirror, poop on the King-pin. Oh well... sigh! Same cardboard / duct tape worked. (WD-40 will safely remove the left behind stickum.)

p.s. Robin poop is apparently corrosive.. had to scrape, and repaint the housing. It wouldn't just wash off, without a mess left behind...

Good Luck,
