6.7 Diesel doesn't shut off immediately

Thanks everyone. I tried to type the VIN in but it said it hasn't been released yet. I'm going to run it by the diesel guy I know and have him look at it. If it is not right I'll take it to a dealer and have them check it out. While they say the oil was changed and the monitor says it's ok, I'd feel better with a fresh load of oil and new filters in it. Thanks again. Tom

I'd bypass the friend and go straight to Ford.
That turbocharger is turning some pretty high RPM's when running, especially towing. It needs time to slow down and dissipate some heat.
If you have Ford do an oil change, read your owners manual about oil requirements when in severe service, which includes towing. My 2014? highly recommended 5W-40 synthetic. I would highly recommend some of that Shell Rotella T6 synthetic 5w-40. ahem

Does your truck have an EGT gauge?

The truck does not have an EGT gauge. I was able to get the original window sticker and it appears it also doesn't have the engine shutdown timer option. FYI, my friend is a certified Ford Diesel mechanic. He recently opened his own shop. Thanks

I probably speak for most of the previous posters on this thread when I ask this question: Why would you be so set against taking your small fortune truck to an authorized Ford dealership? I'm sure your friend is a cool guy, knows a lot, runs a nice little repair shop. But he STILL isn't authorized to do any warrantee repair work on your truck. I might add that neither is the Toyota dealer. We aren't trying to impress on you about being correct, just trying to keep your t-t out of a wringer.

With or without the engine shutdown timer option (that may or may not always work), you might want to consider installing an EGT gauge. Monitor it prior to shutdown for the normal idle EGT prior to shutdown and wait until it cools to that nominal temperature before shutting it down. Around town, without a tow, shutdown is OK. Rolling off the freeway during a tow for a fuel stop, the EGT will indicate high enough that an immediate shutdown would not be prudent. Pretty simple, direct reading process, especially considering that you don't have the timer option.

FWIW, I asked about the engine shut down timer for our new F-350 and was told they are only sold as an option in fleet trucks from Ford. Don't know if it's true or not, but that's what I was told by the ford dealer.

Also, I don't know if I recommend doing this often, but there was a time on one trip that I NEEDED to find a facility quickly (I drove a little too long) but also needed to let the truck idle to cool down according to the EGT gauge we have. So, since our truck has remote start, I just shut the truck down and restarted it with the key fob. Doors were locked and I had the keys with me so felt OK doing it. I know it probably wasn't the best thing to do, but in a pinch it worked well enough. Figured it was better than just completely shutting it down without cooling it off.

Engine shutdown only on XL and XLT models. Probably to keep workers on the job and out of the AC or heated cab!!

This is just my opinion, I can't really back it up with any "Ford data", but I'd suppose that what you did, towing "hard" and having a hot turbo, turning it off and then spending 10-15 seconds getting out of the truck, locking the doors, pushing the remote start button the three times it takes to get it started again, was probably all the time it would take for the oil in the turbo bearings to "coke". Once that was done, restarting it is probably more an effort to make you feel better than it is to protect the turbo... It's sort of like leaving a hot iron on a white shirt for a bit too long... As long as the iron is moving, you're OK, but once you stop, those "couple of seconds" is all it takes to burn the fabric... Keep in mind, this is just my opinion, that sitting for those few seconds is all the time it takes....

Now, what I do (right or wrong) is to pull into the parking spot, and if I can, I get out and do my tire checks, etc while the truck is idling... If I get into a "can't wait another second" kind of urgency, I leave the truck running, key in the ignition, lock the doors and run to do what needs done..... Then, when I get finished, I head right back out to the truck, use the keypad on the door to unlock it and get my digital thermometer and do my checks.... It might not be the "safest way" because I guess it's always possible that someone would smash the window and steal the truck, but to do that, they'd have to know whether or not there's a key in the ignition or if I had the "engine idle shutdown" feature.... So, they'd probably have to bust the window in either situation.... Not the best, I know, but I'd be leary about shutting the engine down and restarting it after a few seconds.... It might be OK, I've never seen any data to say it is or isn't, but I'd prefer to leave it running with cooler oil being pumped through the turbo and not risk it....

Just my opinion, with not much to base any criticism on about the way you did it, so... "For what it's worth" ......

UPDATE, My selling dealer had an aftermarket backup camera system in my truck as part of the sale. It turns out the power line that was tapped off the steering column is the issue causing the delayed shutdown. When I disconnect it the problem goes away. The plan is for them to use one of the accessory wires in the up fitter switch wiring bundle to get power instead. Hopefully it will work properly after that.

Thanks, I like MD but the taxes are terrible. I'll have to move when I retire. Frederick is a nice area. We camped near there last year.

Taxes...even in South Louisiana our local and state taxes have been going up steadily. Cheap to live down here but not so much now..guess someone has to pay for the freeloaders! I've been retired over 5 yrs and loving it...wife is getting ready to retire so we'll be hitting the road camping a little more. Only reason we bought a large toyhauler is to take the daughters and the grandkids with us. The bath and a half comes in handy and when we have to evacuate for a hurricane we can just about stop anywhere with the generator. Hope your problem gets corrected quickly!

Not in my 2016 F350. The doors will not lock with the key in the ignition...

If you cook your oil in the 5 seconds it takes to shut the truck down and restart with the key fob I think I would be looking for some new oil. Remember that you still have residual pressure to bleed off which should be sufficient to keep a bit of oil moving thru there until restart.

Coking is more likely to happen when the oil bleeds off leaving just a residue, but the temps remain very high.

Captain John, on your Ford door locks, lock your doors while sitting in the truck with it running, open the driver's door and get out. Manually lock the push down door lock with your fingers and then slam the door. Use your keypad to re-enter. Works like a charm.

Final update, the camera system now has a diode installed to keep from back feeding the ignition. This resolved the issue.
