Farmington NM-Moab w/stop by Monument Valley Tribal Park

First real unfamiliar leg of a 3-week trip from OKC thru West Coast in September. We have an F250 4x4 w/X Lite 27RKS, the couple traveling with us a Dodge 3500 4X4 w/42' 5er. This seems fairly straightforward, but could use help from those that have been to the Tribal Park, esp. from this direction. Will we be able to see the iconic rock formations (Stagecoach 1939 etc) from the Visitor Center or will we need to take the 17 mile scenic drive within the Park. Is the scenic drive in and of itself worth an unhitch and use of one of our 4WDs? Will this detour (with scenic drive) set us back more than 4 hours total on way from Farmington to Moab? Thanks for any help.

I don't know about the tribal park but if you're in Farmington you might want to spend a day so you could go see the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings about 1 1/2 hours north and Aztec ruins which are fairly close to Farmington. Of the two, Mesa Verde is FAR more interesting IMO. You can google the cliff dwellings; they are really impressive in person.

Been there. They have a large parking lot for truck and RV. From the visitor center you can get a good idea of the scenes. They do have guide services, but the price is pretty steep. The place is well worth visiting and an unhitch.
