Custer or Hill City

We plan to be in the Black Hills in a couple of weeks and wondered if there is any advantage to staying in either Hill City or Custer for exploring the southern part of the area. After that we plan to move the TT to either Deadwood or Spearfish to see the northern part.

Anyone have any particular favorites?

We stayed in Custer. Fantastic campground called Big Pine. Very spacious sites and great owners.

We stayed at Mt Rushmore koa in hill city. Second time there and it was great!

We stayed at the Custer KOA in 2011. Nice but very tight sites. It was ok since we were only there to sleep. This campground would not be my first choice for a return trip
I recommend a trip to Devils Tower if you have time. The KOA there is nice.

I agree on Big Pine Campground just outside of Custer. We stayed there last summer. Nice and quiet. Very friendly owners. We would definitely stay there again.

Thanks, everyone. Custer it is. We will also stay in Deadwood for a couple of nights, as it seems more central to the rest of the things we want to see.

Big Pine is the place to stay - if you like more privacy than what you get at most parks. Great owners. We would definitely stay there again if in the area.

We love Big Pine as well, but the kids voted for the park about a mile down the road with the water slide and pool. We still stayed at Big Pine because I like getting back off the road a bit in some trees where I don't feel like I'm in town.

We stayed at Crooked Creek next to Hill City last September. The staff was great and a lot of grass for the dogs. 😉

We are currently at Crooked Creek in Hill City. There is a sign on the cash register in the office that states, "Some devices will not connect to our WiFi system. There is a limited access available in the office for camper's use.". For the first time in 6 years, every device we own will not connect. My "hunch" is there's a router working, but no internet connection to that router.... The site (#15) is about 50' long, but unfortunately, it's only about 18' wide. With our slide extended, there is barely enough room between the trailer and the neighbor to extend the awning. There are several "nice, wide" sites, but the majority are very narrow. While riding around today, I noticed that there are several campgrounds in the vicinity that are much more spacious.

If you're considering visiting the Mt Rushmore/Crazy Horse area, check other campgrounds first, and Crooked Creek as a "last resort"........

FYI--The 75th annual Sturgis motorcycle rally is August 3-9, and they are estimating more than one million folks will be there. I think you will have a difficult time finding any campground that is not already full. We have attended the rally many times and literally booked our spot at the Mount Rushmore KOA campground one year out.

We stayed at the Spearfish KOA. Big sites and extremely nice people. Drove to Rushmore, Crazy horse and Dead Wood.

We stayed in Beaver Lake camp ground, Custer SD. Loved it. It had great reviews and lived up to all of them.

The "Official" dates for the Sturgis MC Ralley may be Aug 3-9, but when we drove through Sturgis yesterday, there were at least 1000 cycles on the roads. I know there will be many more than that during those dates, but from what I saw around Sturgis (and even here) the ralley is already in "full swing".

Sturgis has unofficially expanded into a 3 week event. Many folks come a week before and many stay the week after. I grew up in Custer, still have family there - many of them get out of the Hills during August, as it is insanely crowded with bikes.
