What is the best home site for a week in the black hill/Mount Rushmore area?

Starting to dream about next spring and am wondering where is the best area and campground to stay in for a week or so in the Mount Rushmore area.
Is it Deadwood, sturgis or where? And any suggestions for good campgrounds would be welcome as well

We really liked Custers gultch in Custer. It was close to everything. Quiet, clean and the management were super people.

We stayed at Rafter J Bar up in Hill City. Its a lot cooler there and close to all the sites except the Black Hills witch is a short drive back down the hill.

Deadwood is a long, windy drive to the sites. Sturgis is a little closer but still a long way. Stay in the Hill City area--it is very nice and close to all the main sites. Rafter J Bar is the nicest but a little spendy. If you have kids, the KOA right near the monument is great, but also spendy.

We stayed at the KOA in spearfish...one of the nicest owners I have ever met, Park was spotless, showers were clean and there was a craft store.

If you like KOA, there are two near Mt. Rushmore; but if you have children, the one in Hill City is a fairyland for kids. There are pools with water slides, jumping pillows, on and on. It's close to everything. The one in Custer is nice, too, but nowhere near the amenities. Beautiful area - don't forget Devil's Tower, WY.

If you decide on the KOA in Custer, choose your site if you can. When we stayed there, the site was very tight & there was barely room to park my truck.

Big Pine CG in Custer. Large open spaces and plenty of trees for shade. Very well maintained cg and great owners. Very reasonable pricing also.

I don't know about the campgrounds in the area but there is a good resturant around there. Apline Inn, best and most inexpensive Filet Minot I have ever eaten. Just north of Mount Rushmore. Here link - directions from Mount Rushmore, only 12 miles

Hart Ranch

We spent the summer workamping near Rapid City, at Hart Ranch. This is a membership park, so you would have to call them to see how you can stay there. It is located about 5 miles south of Rapid City. East of Reptile Gardens about 3 miles. Easy to get to Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Keystone, Hill City, and others.
The park has three hot tubs, really nice pool, lots of trees, nice big sites, and plenty of activities. They have pickleball, shuffleboard, tennis, paintball, bike rentals, horseback riding, and mini golf among other things. Lots of Family and Kid oriented activities. Full Hookups mostly, unless you are in the overflow area they call "the Meadows". Also close to a golf course.
It's worth checking out!

We stayed at Mystery Mountain RV Park in Rapid City last August. It is in the pines and it was a nice place. Not to far from Rushmore and full hookups.
