Danny, Brent, and some of you old-timers, (Not to hijack this thread of course) I'll bet you remember some of the old Kiekhaefer-Mercury outboards with the double sided distributors and starter solenoids that drive in both directions. Our first (and only) was about a 1960 70 HP, inline 6 with three carb's. Turn the key to the right and it went forward, turn the key to the left and it went in reverse. No gearshift. When we bought it I'd never heard of anything like it.

I've seen those but never drove one. Kiekhaefer was a pretty smart guy. I've owned a few Mercs but the oldest as I recall was a 70s vintage 115 Tower of Power 6 cylinder. It was pretty fun. The last I had was a 2015? 5.7L MerCruiser. Sorry Brent....what about those tires!!!

Got the 3rd tire delivered by Fedex today. Took it to WalMart and had it mounted and balanced.
Back in the 1950's and 60's Dad always seemed to have Johnsons or Evinrude. We had a mighty fine bass fishing spot that was owned by the city of Houston. Maybe 600 acres of shallow water that had a 10HP limit. We fished it hard, Dad was fairly well known around the neighborhood as a very serious bass fisherman on local waters. He also fly fished from a float tube and was fairly successful at it. Referred enough fishermen to the local hardware store for fly rods that the owner just gave Dad one every spring.
All that said, I wasnt exposed to Mercury's until I bought my own in the 1990's.
I've got a pic of one of the 50's era Johnsons I'll look for..

I try not to hate too much but, I hate airboats. Nothing like having a quiet sunrise in the marsh and an airboat fires up and puts every bird in the air within a mile. I can see them for law enforcement but that's about it.

But the 35HP surface drive and the long tail boat is a sweet combo. I was just getting too much of a physical work out with the long tail, and the worst part was it was dangerous for docks and other boats. It was very difficult to maneuver around boat ramps and docks. If you're up and running down the bayou or in the marsh it's no big deal. Max speed was 18 mph, with the 35HP surface drive I hit 29mph. Realize that they have no gearbox...no neutral or reverse. GoDevil is just now building rigs with gearboxes and F-N-R drive. Others have been for awhile.
I bet there's some in Florida.
You fall out of the back of one with a long tail I guess you have a good chance of getting hit with the prop….like fallin into a blender lol

Nice looking boat!

Pic of my Dads 1957? Johnson 7 1/2 HP. I inherited it but traded it to my brother for a Ron Chapman Pirogue. Brother sent it up to St Louis I think to be restored. They cleaned it up and repainted it in factory colors. Looks real good. My brother gave it to my son who wants to put it in his den. He's getting a little push back on that. LOL
Click on the pic and it'll go vertical.

Wow! That brings back memories. My dad and uncles fished out of a 14' Lone Star aluminum boat with a 10hp Johnson on the back...about a 1950/52. It was sort of a sea green and ran like a top until about 2005 or so. He was getting Alzheimers and let a guy he thought he knew take it and use it. Called me one day and said it wouldn't run anymore so looked at it the next time I went down and couldn't get it to do anything. Don't know what that guy did to it but it was still sitting in its case in the shed when I sold his house after he passed away. That was a great little motor and still looked new. Those fins sure came in handy hoisting the thing around.

Yeah around here it seemed to be either a Lone Star or a Ouchita. We didn't fish the bay so a 14'X36" worked pretty well negotiating around cypress trees and stumps. Biggest waves were the wakes of other 14' john boats. I miss those days.

Danny,

I think it was right around 2005 that the federal gubmint mandated that gas sold for highway use had to be 10% ethanol. That old Johnson wasn't built for that kind of fuel and it's likely that adding ethanol gas to the tank "gummed up the fuel lines" and led to carburetor damage. It's a shame that happened, but I've got a 6HP Merc (white top) with the same problem sitting in the corner of my pole barn right now. Sooner or later I'll get the time to take it apart and rebuild the carb and try to get it running again. It was my grandfather's last outboard and one of my uncles "used it one summer" and brought it back to Grandma. Told her it stopped running, so she put it in the storage shed. I wound up with it since nobody else wanted it. I've had it about 35 or 40 years and it was 25 or 30 years old when I got it. Every once in a while I'll pull the plug, spray some SeaFoam in the cylinder and pull the starter rope a few times. It'll fire but not run, so its a fuel problem.... Quite the antique now.....

I recently developed an idea about flushing marine fuel systems with carbs. My GoDevil has quick connects on the 2 portable 6 gallon tanks. I made a short section of fuel hose with a quick connect for the tank end of the fuel line. After using ethanol gas (all we can get in this area) I disconnect the tank and connect the short 18" section of hose. Then drop the open end of the fuel line into a quart of "canned non ethanol gas". Run it for awhile, 5 minutes, then disconnect the quick connect and run the motor until it dies. I don't know if it helps, but there should be a minimum of ethanol sitting in the carb.

That’s actually a good idea…can’t hurt

I’ll see your Mercury and Johnson and raise you an original Johnson 25 tiller, a Goodyear sea-bee and a little evinrude with a internal tank

The sea bee and Johnson have been sitting in one of my garages since probably the 1960s..untouched
The little evinrude I picked up for $100 and it started right up..I have a dinghy from the 1950s that needs a new stem board fitted…I bought it for that but honestly just love old outboards….and soda machines…and radios..cameras..I like old things

Yep, that Johnson is the same color as my dad's was. Looks just about like it except it's a 25 - probably take a little more "oomph" to pick up and drag down to the boat too.

Super cool pics. Those need to be on the stern of a little wooden boat. Not a fiberglass boat, not a plywood boat, a lapstrake boat.
I think I have a pic of a cool little boat we saw when we were in Oxford, MD.

Oh this thing was cute. I think it had a B&S with maybe a Mikuni carb or just an after market air cleaner. Straight inboard. The black exhaust is seen about mid ship. I shot the pick out my truck window.

Yeah that’s a Smith Island crab skiff…they race them on the bay just for fun..my daughter and her fiancé (not for long the wedding is tomorrow)
race the cocktail class hydroplanes ..small little racers with little outboards for the sport of it.

And yes the boat I have for the little evinrude is a Carvel planked 8’ dinghy..I drove up to Newport Rhode Island with my FIL about 16 years ago to buy a boat engine for his boat..saw the dinghy at the boat yard and bought it…it is really nice and original but the stem board need to be replaced …( it’s an intricate 3 piece stem with all of the planks tied in) my fil was going to do it for me but passed away before he got a chance…I just have so many other projects it kinda too a back seat…

^Never heard of it. It is too cool. Sounds like you're getting a good SIL.
Is the stem board part of the keel?

My dad had a folding Ted Williams 3 horse outboard. It folded up and sat in a "can" with a lid. He used to put it in the truck of his 1950 Chevy "turtleback 2 door" and tied his home-made wooden "pee-row" on top. We'd fish trot lines on the Tangiaphoa River and sleep on a sand bar every Saturday night. As a 8 or 9 year old, I used to think it was "just too cool" to skip Sunday School and drink coffee with Dad. He'd let me hold the transom of the boat while he lifted it off the roof of the car, but he never trusted me with carrying that little outboard in the can. As a "know it all teenager" that's the boat I shot the bottom out of when a moccasin fell into the boat and I couldn't hit him with a paddle.... Adrenalin does really strange things to a scared kid !!!!!
