Re: Towmax ST2

All steel? What did I miss?

On another note; click on the tab in the upper right corner of the page that the link takes you to "TBC Brands" and note the various tires this company makes....just for your own information

A lot of people use the all steel version when running Towmax. As soon as they blow, you're running on all steel, or aluminum.

Reminds me of airlines in economic trouble rebranding themselves with new airplane livery and pilot uniforms just before bankruptcy.

Re: Towmax ST2

After checking the site information. I read that they have a nylon over lay, what ever that means, it is not steel. Not sure where the all steel information came from.

This may help.

Another innovation is the Nylon wedge.

Re: Towmax ST2

According to TBC the STR ll has only been in use since late 2015. Radial steel up the sidewall. It has only been available as a replacement tire not oem. So has anybody bought and used the STR ll?

Re: Towmax ST2

Thanks CW.
Quick question about these all steel tires. I thought the R on a tire means radial and that means steel belts. Are these steel belts a new design on this tire. I may not be the only one who does not know. Might be helpful when looking at new tires.

Re: Towmax ST2

Yes the "R" in a tire's size description (ST225/75R16E) identifies it as a radial design.

All tires have a short list of their basic building materials listed on their sidewalls. That includes sidewall materials.

Here is a picture I took of a tire's materials description.

http://www.irv2.com/photopost/showfull.php?photo=27063

Most steel cased tires used for RV trailer service right now are 16". However, some 15" ones will be on the market soon.

Most trailer tires have a rim width range that could look like this; 6"-7" with the measuring rim being 6.5". To date all of the 16" steel cased tires have a single "approved" rim size of 6.5". Some of the newer brands are so serious about it they are putting the required rim width on the tire's sidewall. Here is a picture of one I took at a RV show earlier this year.

http://www.irv2.com/photopost/showfull.php?photo=29709

No savvy tire installer would ever mount a tire marked for a 6.5" wide rim on anything other than the required 6.5" wide rim.

A tire's strength is in its casing and the amount of tire inflation it can sustain. Belts, overlays, sidewall inserts and treads are all durability items, not to be confused with load strength.

They advertise a nylon overlay on 15" and 16" sizes. All steel?

Steel belts are not a new feature on ST tires.

Re: Towmax ST2

Thanks again CW.
I checked the factory tires on my trailer Power King- tow max. ST225/75R15
and they have printed on sidewall 2 poly/2 steel/1 nylon. I did not recheck the date but believe it is 2012 with different months of that year.
I am guessing the new style mentioned on the post has steel belts that are different than there older style. But, they are not all steel belts. Still have nylon and maybe poly also.

Re: Towmax ST2

I think there "might" be some confusion in "types of plys" being discussed. There are "body plys" (usually polyester, Dacron or nylon) and "tread plys" (usually steel in radial tires) which are covered by a "nylon ply" which helps prevent the steel belts from shifting and separating.

I don't know of any LR C, D, or E (6, 8 or 10 ply) "all steel ply" tire that's marketed for ST use. All have polyester "sidewall plys". Some Goodyear truck tires have started using Kevlar as an additional ply to help strengthen the sidewall for off-road protection, but even they don't have "steel sidewall belts".

ADDED: This is a quote from the Tire Rack website. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....=Towmax+STR+II In it, they describe the STRII composition this way: "The tire's internal structure features twin steel belts (Load Range D & Load Range E-sized tires are reinforced with a nylon cap ply that further stabilizes the tread to increase durability). The Towmax STR II's rounded profile and polyester cord body are designed to help smooth out the trailer's ride." As you can see, the "sidewall plys" are polyester.

Looking at the towmax website the weight for a 225 75r15 LRE is 29 lbs. The weight for a Carlisle HD in the same size is 36 lbs. An increase of 24%+ in weight for the Carlisle; hmmmm................ Wonder what the Towmax skipped??

Bead and side wall??? "During a visit to China in April 2015, Van Ormer saw many new lines of ST products, but says he is aware of only one manufacturer that has “truly changed” the technology of the ST tires. That manufacturer is Carlstar Group LLC, formerly CTP Transportation Products and before that, Carlisle Transportation Products. “With the RH (radial) and LH (bias) trailer tires, they beefed up the bead and sidewall packages so that few others can compete quality-wise with them,” Van Ormer says.".

I've looked at the link to the new Towmax STR and don't see where it says it is all steel, has a steel wire carcass, or any steel in the sidewall. Maybe I missed it. New tread design looks like Maxxis to me, open grooves between the treads all the way around.

If someone ever builds a steel carcass tire like Sailun and Goodyear in load range E they should get plenty of customers.

Michelin & Bridgestone have them, they are LT designed. Their maximum load capacity is 3042# at 80 PSI. Michelin builds them in 4 sizes.
