Floor under shower not insulated.

So I just took the cover off at the bottom of the corner shower to see if there are any leak issues and it all looks nice and dry, BUT I noticed a cutout under the shower drain for whatever reason without any insulation. This normal? Wouldn't you think they throw some batting in there? Anyhow I was also curious what the measurements of the sandwiched floor was like and what I think I see is styrofoam sandwiched between a layer of 1/4' plywood floor and maybe a 1/8" bottom layer. No wonder these floors become soft in high traffic areas by 200lb+ users......

Just a WAG, but I bet it was for the P trap to fit, but they used the Hepvo instead.

OK, I will admit ignorance. What does Hepvo mean? How does it keep odors from coming up from the gray tank?

I'm with Chuck. Looks like a P trap cutout and either the threw in the Hepvo as OE or in the years since it was built someone changed the P trap to the hepvo.

Thanks guys I get it now. Never heard of these devices but they have been around for many years it looks like.
A good option for people that don't use their RV showers.

Thanks guys. I had never heard of these devices and for all I know I might have one under my shower. One of the reasons I like this site, always learning.

Your shower should drain just as well with the Hepvo as it would with a P trap.
If you check you may have one at the kitchen sink &/or the bath lavatory. They're used typically in rvs & modular homes where there's no space for a P trap.

I have the same floor cutout under my drain (it is a standard p-trap). Typical with RV manufacturers where nothing is precise, all openings tend to be much larger than necessary. At least yours has the Darco covering in place, mine was a big open hole to the underbelly space. I had the Coroplast opened for some other work at one point and screwed a piece of plywood over the hole from underneath. We don’t camp in cold weather so I am not worried about the lack of floor insulation in that area. The floor doesn’t have much R-value in the first place, especially considering all the other holes and openings.

Here's 10 minutes I'll never get back....

I think I've got the 'Hep' part...the original patent was applied for in 2005 by 'Hepworth Building Products'. I thought maybe the 'v' was for valve, and the 'o' for one-way, but those letters appear in all the various pieces they make, so perhaps not.

I only have the Hepvo under the shower. The bath sink and kitchen sink both have the P-trap. I see no reason to modify them as it won't give me much more storage space. From what I read it's common for people to switch to the Hepvo is when they don't use the shower in the RV and the P-trap will dry up.

We may camp in cold weather otherwise it's stored on my driveway so I will throw some insulation in there and cover it up with a thin sheet of ply I have laying around.

I'm more concerned with them cutting the floor support framing with no reinforcement. But nothing the manufacturers let slide out the door surprises me anymore.
