That's just the man hours, add facilities maintenance/utilities and materials used and it's pretty easy to see why a "full automotive paint option" is north of $10K ...

Yup!! Our paint booth can hold a 45’ fiver, has 2 natural gas fired burners to heat it up to 150 degrees to cure the paint.
Years ago I was in the Newmar plant, they had 2 booths/ovens.

Just a thought, but I thought shops can only charge by the hour, not by the number of people working on it. With paint, I don’t believe there’s a guide that says you can only charge XX number of hours. They could inflate the hours or have a different shop rate for larger projects that require additional labor to compensate for it, but insurance companies will probably challenge anything that is too inflated. A good quality automotive paint can run $150-200 per gallon and I’m sure shop supplies is pretty extensive, so all of that can add up very fast as well.

That’s why if a job takes 2 hours and two people you charge 4 hrs labor. We do it that way with window removal, awning and roof replacement.

I think that would be governed by state/local laws or by the insurance company if it's a claim. My experience has been with an ins claim the shop sends an estimate to the adjuster and the haggling begins.

The FBP on my last 5er was a $10k option, but after the sale negotiations I paid very little more than the non painted version. The year after I bought mine they didn't offer a non painted model, although I believe they have had them the last couple model years.
If I were to buy another it would be painted!
