Used 2022 Ram 3500 CTD Mega Cab

I just returned home from looking at this used 3500 with just over 5k miles. It is a SRW which I have been trying to get a SRW 3500 for the last nine or ten months to pull my 5er. It is also the same color as my current Ram, which I really like. Even tried to order a new GMC 3500 in Nov of 2021 and that didn't end well.

The Mega cab is huge, actually much larger that what I actually need. But this truck comes stock with the air compression system, which I actually liked. The payload on this truck is 4053#, which is well over my 2500 at 2097#. When I took my current setup to the CAT scales Oct 2021, I was approx 220# over my 2500 payload. That was loaded on the way camping but just by myself.

My current Ram is paid for, nice not having any payments. I could probably get 62k or 63k on trade in for the 3500, asking price on it is 76.9k. Did not discuss dollars with the dealer today, just wanted to look at the truck.

I live alone and have no other knowledgeable people to discuss this with and get opinions. So thanks for your thoughts and experience on this.

i have the ram air suspension and i really like it so far..make sure they do the new owner transfer for the balance of the factory warranty…and a car fax to make sure it hasn’t been in a accident

Only problem with mega cabs is they don’t play well with 5th wheels. I don’t believe you will have any option other than using a slider hitch. I’ve seen people try to use other hitches, like the Andersen thinking the offset would be enough clearance, they switched to a slider after repairing the cab corner, installing new rear window and fixing the damage to the RV. I personally do not like sliders so I would never own one. Of course, I’m not a Ram fan either so this would never be an issue for me.

I've already checked the Carfax on it, no accidents. It was first purchased in Fl in May of this year. Original original owner traded it in for a DRW he found at the dealer I went to today. Thanks for the heads up ref the warranty.

I talked to the Sales Mgr ref the bed size. This one has the same size bed my 2500 does. Which I have had no problem with my Anderen. He said some of the Mega Cab models will have a shorter bed.

DW’s ex has a mega cab and hauled an older 5er all over including a trip to Alaska with no issues. Non slider hitch.

The SRW Ram 3500 is a great truck (I have one ). The mega cab IS huge which is good and bad IMO. If it's just you and you can use that back seat for whatever that would be OK. If you had kids, people or gear you're trying to get to it's a LONG way back there, but, in most instances it would be nice. The only thing for me would be the length and trying to get in my garage but that may not be an issue for you.

I too looked a year for a SRW 1 ton and finally found one on the E coast (FL) and they brought it to Tallahassee for me. What rear axle ratio does it have? I have the 4.10 which is super but I also have a gas engine. With the diesel it won't make much difference. That payload increase is worth it IMO. I used to be a guy that was in the "if it will make it roll we're good" camp even though I'd had some near misses. That's changed and I'm totally into the "capacity reserves" when it comes to payload, tires etc. Unless you have plans to go to a much larger 5th wheel that truck should do just fine. The air suspension will be nice for you as well.

Without a lot of specifics on the new truck pricing comparisons is hard but you can do that with kbb.com, nada.com etc. I generally try not to get mired down in quibbling over a few dollars if it's something I really need. You really need a bigger payload but whether you need THAT truck is really up to you. These days with the scarcity of getting anything close to what you want in a vehicle that one may be the ONE! Good luck.

Edit: saw your next post after I posted this. Measure that bed. I've not measured them but the mega cabs do have a shorter bed in some configurations which might cause a problem hitch wise if it's a short bed.

The 3500 has the 3.73 axle, same as my current 2500. As stated, with the CTD it is great towing.

The mega cab does make it a bit longer wheel base than my 2500, which should also help stabilize the ride. Even though I have had no problem with my 2500. It's just I am slightly over on my payload.

I am gonna ponder this for a couple days and see what I come up with. Especially taking on payments again. Which I can afford, but it is just really nice not having a truck payment.

Thanks for all the input guys. And more will be appreciated.

i wouldn’t think too long or it might be gone unfortunately…these days if something looks good to you it probably looks good to 50 other people…gone are the days when multiple dealers within a half hour had the same truck on their lot..sure miss that

Not many one tons running around waiting to be purchased. Sounds like you were on the verge of talking yourself into moving forward. With less than $20K financed, you should be able to still get a decent loan rate so I doubt that truck will sit on the lot for long. Oh yeah, I am a Ford fan and you should buy a Ford (I think we are supposed to tout the brand we already own).

One other thing to check, I can assume you already have/know this, but I never like to assume, make sure it doesn’t have the Ram box if you’re towing a 5er

Oh definitely no Ram box. Sales mgr said he has a brand new 3500 with the Ram box. I told him no way with a fifth wheel.

Can’t understand “ponder a couple days”! You have been looking for nine or ten months, and you need to ponder a couple days?
When we we looking I had a Ram VIN decoder that would provide me with the factory build list of items and the location it was originally delivered to. If you signed up for Carfax you can get a copy of the factory window sticker.
I did my research before going to look and would what I was going to see.

We drove about 300 miles to buy our 2016 Ram Laramie 3500 DRW HO Aisin with 3.73. I knew all of that before I traveled for about six hours to look at it. We had the financing arranged with our CU before we headed out.

If you wait it may be gone, just and FYI if price and trade in negotiations had not gone in our favor we would have walked! We got a price reduction on the truck and more for our trade than the first offered.

I would have to join the others and say "why wait"? If the money isn't an issue, the current truck certainly is AND trucks like that just aren't out there. As noted, it will be gone quickly since no one can get a new one like they want. If you can swing it I wouldn't hesitate....like in the morning; just make sure that bed works - then let us know how nice that air suspension is!

Update. I bought the truck today !! I'll post pics in a couple days. I have to go to Savannah tomorrow to help my mom and I just finished putting everything in the 3500.

I know, I know, pics or it didn't happen. It did and I'll post them later in the week. Was surprised it even has wireless Android Auto, even though I use my Garmin.

Congratulations on the new truck. The Navigation system isn't bad, but does need map updates from time to time. One of the great features is the Bluetooth to your phone!
