Info on FREE anti-virus program?
I just downloaded a spyware programcalled Malware......it got great ratings from several sites.
It was FREE.
Now I am hoping to find a FREE anti-virus program.
Any recommendations out there?
Some have recommended AVG which I am going to start reading about.
Any other thoughts?
Jo

Jody:
Try Avira Anti-virus -- Personal Edition . It is also free and highly recommended.

Excuse my ignorance,
but there is a lot of it where it
concerns me and computers,
but,
is the Malware spyware
and the AVG 8.5 anti-virus the
same thing?
I get 'mixed' up reading some of this stuff.......
never been a technical wizard........

Jody, the two anti spyware programs that I use are "Malwarebytes" and "Spybot", both are free (sorta) and both do a great job of ridding your computer of trojans and the like. Spyware today has become so sophisticated that it's hard to say that it's not a virus, in fact I don't use an anti-virus program at all, just the two anti-spyware programs and I keep them updated and run them at least on a weekly basis.

What I ended up doing was uninstalling the norton anti-virus that came with my laptop 4 years ago.
and downloading malwarebytes - for spyware
and downloading AVG 8.5 - for anti-virus.
Now I hope I am proctected (at least to some extent)
Trying to get things squared away so IF the house thingee goes thru
& we hit the road in the RV for a while then I have all my ducks in a row.
Just started paying bills on-line, so I am working through that and it
is going well so far. I was a late comer to the on-line banking thing as
far as paying bills, but now I think I've got the hang of it!
Jo
Thanks for all the help everyone!

Microsoft just within the last week released a new anti-virus software that is free. It is getting good reviews. Doesn't hog your system resources.
You can find it here

I've been using Security Essentials from Microsoft for a week or so and have nothing bad to say about it.

After discovering my problems with Vista were caused by McAfee and then Norton, I downloaded AVG on the recommendation of a computer geek friend. I have used it for the past 3 years without a hitch, no problems with Vista.

After my last 2 virus encounters I bought a Imac. But I ended up buying netbooks for the girls and running Malwarebytes and AVG. I had CA on my last two infected computers, ?was it worth it.

I switched over to "Microsoft Security Essentials" this past week and I am impressed with it! It was free from Microsoft, integrates with my XP operating system, satisfy’s the virus protection of the security shield, and has automatic updates from Microsoft. I find that it doesn't load down the OS and slow down the computer. I hit one infected site while browsing (no Hank, it was not a "Hoochi Coochi" site!) and it stopped the transfer of infected files and immediately started to clean the files (NICE!).
