Bathtub stopper

I've noticed that when taking a shower, the stopper doesn't really open all the way and water starts to backup in the tub.

Is there a way to adjust the stopper so its up higher and allows the water to flow faster?

We just take ours out. They just pop in and out. Our tub is to small to use for anything other then taking a shower in so no real need for the stopper to be in.

I did try to pull it up higher, but was afraid to break it. I also tried to screw it both directions but that did nothing also.

How hard do I have to pull?
