Thanksgiving in Alabama

We have our last camping trip for the season planned for the last 2 weeks of November. We'll be heading down to a C.O.E. park near Demopolis, AL, Foscue Creek Campground. We were there last year for Thanksgiving & enjoyed the campground & area very much so we decided to go again this year for a couple of weeks. Thanks to WCW for his input on things to see & do in Meridian, MS, we'll do a day trip there (approx. 50 miles). We will be putting the 5er to bed for the winter, when we return. We'll add some photos of the campground later.

This sounds like a great trip and location. It is less than 4 hours drive for us. This could be one of our trips next spring. Take lots of pictures.

Have fun and enjoy!!

Talking Thanksgiving

As a young man I always enjoyed Thanksgiving. That was the only day I ever watched football, to sit on the sofa to watch the Nebraska/Oklahoma game with my brother-in-law while sipping a whiskey sour and smelling the the turkey and all the fixing cooking in the kitchen, then Nebraska and Oklahoma quit playing on Thanksgiving day. We then discovered camping on Thanksgiving, even better. Sitting at Lake Cachuma in Santa Barbara County CA or camping on the Calif. Coast at Refugio or El Capatan Beach while pains takenly smoking a Turkey on the Weber while sipping a beer and playing horseshoes with old High School friends and their families while the women hiked the cliffs along the shores with the kids. Life has been good to me and I hope it will be the same for all our friends and families, enjoy the holidays! "GO CAMPING IF YOU CAN"

Jim & Kay - how is your trip going?

When I first started talking about heading your way my DW was all excited and ready to go. Then we figured out it was not to be. So we have planned a trip to the Toledo Bend (louisiana/Texas border) area for business and pleasure and will leave on December 2nd.

We have some old friends there that we have not seen in years that we want to visit with.

Natchitoches has the Christmas festival that the DW wants to see. We do not have any kids, but my wife makes up for it at Christmas time. She has already dug out the Christmas statues and globes we got when my parents passed away and they are everywhere in the house.

We will also go to Shreveport to meet with our Financial Advisor.

A Great Trip

We are back home and ready to put the Cougar HC 5er to bed for the winter but the 2 weeks we spent in it were terrific. We enjoyed a sight seeing trip to Meridian, MS, where we visited an old General Store and a historical mansion. Demopolis, Alabama, is home to some beautiful historical mansions, also, we toured Bluff Hall & Gaineswood both were awesome, if you like that sort of thing. The Army COE gave a group of campers a free guided tour of the Lock & Dam near Foscue Creek Campground and we were fortunate to have a barg enter the Lock so we actually saw it in opperation, instead of just being told how it works. We have been on lock tours before but still enjoyed it.
Our only regret with the trip is we should have scheduled to stay a couple more days. Last night and today there are lots of activities associated with Christmas on the River, including a BBQ cook off, that included samples of BBQ & Beer (for Jim), a parade (the Grand Marshalls were the Alabama Gang: Donnie & Bobby Allison & Red Farmer) and a nautical parade this evening. Oh well, maybe next year.

That is great that you had a great time. Sorry about missing out on the Christmas festivities.

We had to cancel our trip due to our Cajun Riviera did not want to go. It slipped out of the hitch and tore up my tailgate.

Reubenray,
Sorry to hear about your bad luck, did it damage the 5er or was the tailgate the only victim? Did your hitch fail to lock......?

Since you are in the south, will you be able to get another trip in later? Our camping is done until Spring, it is backed in the building for the winter.

Since we didn't get together in Alabama, we will be hopeful you & your DW can make it to the Rally in May 2013.

I am starting to think more and more it was my fault. But the DW will not be comfortable until I can confirm it was not the hitch. If I feel comfortable that it was not the hitch I will get a BedSaver just in case.

All it damaged was the tailgate. I raised it back up off the truck as fast I could. I contacted my auto insurance and it will cost me the $500 deductible. The tailgate saved the side panels.

I most likely will not take another trip until next spring. It is already winterized.

I have the rally trip location saved in Mapquest just in case we can make the trip. Mapquest gave me several different routes. One was through Atlanta and the other Birmingham. I do not want anything to do with Atlanta. I figured it would take me 3 days to get there.

Travel thru Atlanta

I live here and keep our RV in the N Georgia mountains (Dahlonega). When we travel through Atlanta, we do so by ensuring the time of day is critical. Our "home" is 25 miles NE of city center. I bring our RV home the day prior to departure and leave the house "rolling" at 5am, coffee in hand. Stop for breakfast around 7:30 -8am, either, way south; east or west of Atlanta traffic.

Returning, I generally stay someplace that allows us to travel through the traffic zones after 10am and before 3pm. If a night arrival; after 8pm is a given.

I would use the same plan for NYC, DC, Miami, etc...it relieves stress and makes for enjoyable travel. Even the wife is relaxed.

This is the good news about being retired. Plenty of time to play.
