Quick connect for grill

I bring a small/full size grill camping and got sick and tired of taking one of the thirty pounders off the front all the time, and I refuse to carry a seperate 20 pounders. Simple solution was to break the propane line after the bottles and put a tee, valve and quick connect. I then connected a 25' hose to the grills regulator, works awesome.

I like this... I've been looking to do this with mine for some time now. Would you mind sharing all the components you used to do this? What I am not sure of is the fitting size for the quick connect.
My camper has an outside kitchen with a quick connect for the outside stove and wanted to use the same size as the factory one (add a second for the grill).

springdale5, Howdy;

Glad to see you are using a manual shut-off
along with the QD.. Sort of like the guys that wear both a belt and suspenders... what you may refer to as a true 'Safety Person' ...

grill quick connect

I believe the factory quick connect may be smaller than the ones I used. I broke into my line at the front of my trailer, right where the hose from the tanks screwed into a fitting. All the thread sizes were half inch, except the quick connect. I used the following parts:
1- half inch female flare to half inch male pipe thread adapter
1- half inch black steel T fitting
1- half inch male pipe thread to half inch male flare adapter
1- half inch close nipple
1- half inch gas valve
1- half inch to quarter inch pipe thread reducer
1- quarter inch male thread quick connect, female side
For the grill, I removed the hose that ran between the regulator and the tank. Then screwed a standard air compressor line into the regulator, threads are both quarter inch. I then screwed the male part of the quick connect onto the other end of the air line. That's it, I also ran everything and sprayed it down with leak detector.

I'm not trying to pooh pooh your project in fact I love it and may want to do it to mine as I am currently running my grill and a 2 burner propane coleman stove off bottles or a 20lber when I camp.

My question is, have you talked to any propane experts to see if using the standard air compressor line as part of your mod is ok? Seems I read somewhere that the propane lines and/or fittings for propane were specialized and needed to be rated for propane and using air compressor parts was a no-no.

I'm no expert in either so I'm only mentioning as a precautionary reply so you can check it out if you haven't already as I know you don't want any safety issues nor would I or anyone else if we follow in your footsteps with this mod. Please let us know if you find out anything.

Air compressor QC fittings are not appropriate for propane applications. They leak. If you have a propane fitting for an outdoor kitchen, standard air compressor fittings won't mate with it. The reason... They leak. Get the idea? They leak, and you havn't seen anything until you see someone who was caught in a propane explosion. I have. You don't want to go there.

FYI, Keystone uses Fairview propane fittings. You can find them all over the Internet. They cost a little more, but this is not where you want to cheap out. What I like about the Fairview QCs is that there is a shut off lever that must be closed to connect or disconnect the hose. The reason for doing this is? You guessed it. Even propane QC fittings can leak. If your QC does not have a shut off, install one. They don't cost that much. Connect pipe thread fittings with YELLOW teflon tape, not the white type that's used on water fittings. Flare fittings do not get thread tape, but everything needs to be leak checked with a soap bubble solution. If you see a single bubble, take it apart and do it over. Copper lines need to be secured every 12" or so to eliminate rubbing a hole in it. Copper is soft.
Propane is no joke. It's perfectly safe when handled right, but if you are not familiar with working with it, get some help from someone who is.

Camco makes a kit to convert barbeques from 1LB bottles or 20LB cylinders to use the Low Pressure system on you unit. I have used them to convert my BBQ and propane fire pit at well as three others. The kits don't work on some Coleman unite. Coleman uses propritory stuff.
Camping World sells them IN SOME STORES (not on line it seems) and most good RV parts department can get them.
It is a Camco 4100 Low Pressure Conversion kit, Part Number 57638.
See it here; http://www.camco.net/#app=827&913e-s...electedIndex=0

It has the hose you need and all the fittings as well as the control valve that replaces the adjustable regulator.

I hope this helps,
...Brent...

grill qc reworked

I appreciated all the comments. After some research found that propane will shorten the life of a non propane rated hose. As per a couple of propane company employees, they really didn't see the difference in the qc. Anyway, for my revised version, I screwed one end of a ten foot propane rated hose into the tee. On the other end I put the female quick connect with the integrated valve, and installed the male qc into the grills regulator. Purchased the kit at local camping world. This setup is similar to factory set ups.

I already have a quick connect for my factory small grill and wanted to find away to connect my new colman tailgate grill. I tried to find hose and/or correct fittings with no luck. I eventually went to RV Dealership today who provided me with a propane approved "T" that will go in the front of the TT between the tank and regulator. Colman sells a 8' extention house that will connect directly to the "T". I guess the only issue would be if the 'T" in on the right side tank and it goes empty and the regulator switches over to the left tank the grill wont have any propane

If your propane employees were licensed, they would have told you. It has to have the "AGA" or "UL" approval embossed on it. In the event of any accident, your insurance company would leave you holding the bag, your fault or not.

I modified mime too, but I'm a licensed gas fitter. My local RV dealership said they wouldn't modify any gas lines. Which is good, because I would have asked to see their licensees.

I'm glad to see you re-did it right, but did you have it inspected? Just to take you off the hook.

grill qc

Checking back in on the little/big project. Hankaye, finally had time to get a pic. In short, put tee in after the reg, put 10' hose in tee, put qc shutoff combo at other end of hose. All components are "propane" rated. For storage I coil the hose up and attach it to the clamp down bar for the tanks. This way its secure and protected under the tank cover.

There's a sticky in the mods section on preparing a propane grill to be used with the trailer's low pressure quick connect that feeds the outdoor kitchen. I wrote it. It accomplishes the same thing as the Rube Goldberg setup, it doesn't modify the trailer propane system at all and it's safe. Good luck with yours.

Propane Connections

You might want to use the yellow (gas) teflon tape to ensure the connections don't leak. It seems that the pictures are showing white teflon tape.

Food for thought and no criticism intended:

I think it could be a lot easier and use a lot less adapters and such if one just removed a 90 degree ell from the 1/2" iron pipe a little further downstream and replaced it with a tee to which the new shut off and QC are then connected.

If I recall correctly, a while back someone posted a similar mod using the method I just described.

Lp quick connet splitter?

Does any one know if there is a quick connect splitter for the outdoor rear gas line for outdoor kitchen of 31BHPR. I have a Bills Bumper Q setup with a Uniflame grill I wish to be able to tap into and split LP feed on occasion. I have the LP conversion kit which I have not used just yet, however I am not sure it is possible to split split to grill and outside factory burners.
