Fixed Folding Step Replacement

I was about to click on ordering a set of Torklift Glowstep Revolution Uprising steps but decided to watch a couple of installation videos.

I am removing the Morryde StepAbove fixed steps (with the Keystone logo on them) and replacing with the above Torklift steps. Looking at the videos of both the OE Morryde steps required the interior door trim to be cut off some 22 1/2" - the Torklift product does not require that. For those that have done this (I thought I read a couple of posts from some that had done it??), what did you do with that trim board gap? I assume I would buy new trim board but wondering what kind of material I would find to match "RV" trim stuff. It also appears there will be quite a few holes that the new steps won't cover - are there any in the floor that are left uncovered?? Just want to be prepared before I tear it all out. TIA for any pointers.

Very interesting!! I’ll be watching this thread. Haven’t installed any yet, so I can’t say what it takes exactly.

Yeah, in my mind (memory?) it was going to be a snap; just some screws then drop the new set in but got to thinking about how they supported that strut and what was entailed so I watched those videos.

You can't really tell how wide the Torklift threshold is vs the one on the Morryde leading to worries about expose holes in the floor and then the 22+" of exposed bracing on the door frame where the trim has been removed was another little "hmmm". I could always get some kind of trim from HD or someplace like that and make my own but would really like the trim to match the rest of the trailer as new as it is. I'll talk to my dealer tomorrow and see if they can get it. If so, I'll just order some and go at it if someone hasn't come up with a better plan.

I have the Morryde (Keystone) factory tip in steps (4). They have the gas strut and interior braces that run up the interior side of the door facing requiring the removal of 22 1/2" of trim so they can screw to the interior face of the door frame. The Glowsteps will have braces that screw to the "inside" faces of the door frame vs interior/exterior faces. Both have thresholds that screw down into the floor and I'm thinking the Glowstep will be large enough to cover the ones used for the Morryde and I can just seal them up before putting the new threshold down. Just don't want to spend 827 + tax then find I can't use them as I won't leave exposed holes in the floor. Thanks for the input.

As you know, most people replace the factory fold-out steps with either the tip-in steps or the Glowsteps.

Going the opposite way is a little more of a challenge. But not as bad with the newest version designed to replace the factory tip-in steps. I am not sure what the trim issue is (I removed the fold-up steps and added the MorRyde tip-in steps). I didn’t have to touch the trim, but since yours has the gas piston lift assist that might be the hardest part to figure out. The tip-in steps hinge mounting bolts will leave visible holes in the floor 2-3” out from the threshold but the new steps “should” cover them.

Pretty pricy steps!

With the Morryde steps I have to pull the trailer out of the barn every time I want to go in and do anything or I have to pull it to the house. They are proud of those things but DW and I both dislike all the extra hoops required to get in the RV just because of those fixed steps. I used to be able to go inside and do whatever I needed to do, those steps prevent that.

Danny,

I did this on our new camper. I also saw where there was going to be a gap in the trim on the one side of the door due to the gas strut that I was removing with the solid steps. My fix is not fancy, nor very creative. I called our manufacturer (Alliance) and asked them if I could buy a new trim piece for the door and why I was wanting it. They sent me the trim piece a couple of days later at no charge.

The only ideas I can think of would be seeing if your dealer would be able to order in a piece for you, or if Trekwood (if that the correct name of the company) would have your specific trim piece?

Also, the Glowsteps did cover the holes in our floor when I pulled out the Lippert Solid Steps. I did silicone the holes in the floor that are covered, because I’m a little weird though.

Don’t know if these help, but here’s what ours look like after I installed them. And, of course, they just had to post sideways....

Lynette thanks so much for responding. I was thinking maybe it was you that had mentioned making this change but couldn't remember.

The trim board is a bit of a worry but I can deal with that. The holes in the floor that might not be covered was a bigger concern. And yes, I'm a little (maybe a lot) weird when it comes to my RV/TV.

Thank you for the pics. I'll be ordering the steps straight away.

Edit: Are those upper supports screwed to the inside face of the door or the interior as the Morryde flip up steps? They look exactly like what we want.

The screws are through the door frame, inside face. The following photo shows it a little better if you zoom in. Also, here is the photo showing them more as a “ladder” than as steps. I do use them this way when I don’t feel like pulling them out the whole way. Also, I do love that the bottom step can be left unextended for when you don’t need the fifth step.

Thanks Lynette! I think that answers the questions I had. Looks like they will take care of the issues the fixed steps pose for us. The pics are appreciated.
