30 AMP replacement end

After many years of use, my 30 AMP cable / female end fried so I bought a camo RV female connector body replacement. The issue I'm having is that the instructions are saying to hook the black and white wires up just opposite of what their hooked up now. I checked the cable male end and it corresponds with the current wiring configuration. So do I stick with the way it's connected now?

Sorry I was looking at the instructions wrong ... LOL

Hi Lost,

Assuming that both existing plug ends are original wiring, I would wire the new female to match the one you are replacing. Keep in mind that it is easy to get 'reversed' when looking at the plug from the wiring side vs. the plug end.

Before buttoning up your project I would do a continuity check, end for end, on each conductor. Keep in mind that reversing your hot lead with your neutral lead is not a good situation. Wall outlets are now polarized, because modern electronics are more sensitive than the stuff we used to use. Also swapping leads will probably trip your GFIs as neutral and ground share a common buss bar in the power pedestal.

Good Luck,

The terminal screws are usually different colors. The green one gets the green wire. The white one gets the white wire. The copper or brass colored one gets the black wire.

One of the $5 three LED testers can be used to test your work. If you get the reverse polarity led, you have the black and white swapped.

If you have a surge/line protecter plug it in and see if shows up with anything.
