Roof Vents cracked?
Any thoughts about leaving my covered roof vents cracked open when storing for the winter? I do not store in a building or have an RV cover. Thanks in advance.

With vent covers, I don't see any reason why you can't leave them open just enough to help control excess moisture.

Many people do leave them open, others don't. If you think about it, whether they are open or not, once the snow covers the openings in the vent cover, the vent is effectively closed until the snow melts enough that they are open again. Consider that if snow blows into the openings, it will not be detected until the snow melts and then, depending on when you are able to check, you may have water sitting under the vents (on the bed, carpet, etc) until you do open the RV in the spring.

If you open the vent just enough that the bottom edge of the lid is below the elevation of the top of the vent, then melting snow is a moot point, right?
Just askin, since snow and winterizing aren't part of my normal vocabulary. I don't have vent covers, and when I set my lids as described above, I don't get any water inside even in wind driven rain.

I was thinking of only having them open enough so they weren't down snug. Just not sure how much good it will do. Current have all cabinets and interior doors open, including the fridge. Also have a big bucket of Damp Rid in it. All the traps and the black and grey have antifreeze in them. Lines were blown out too.

I leave my vents open all year long .. have never had a problem with rain or even powdery snow, pollen in the springtime will get in but the screen usually catches most of it. I also leave one of the kitchen awning windows open a crack so some air can flow through. Been doing this for twenty years and never had a moisture problem. (and I live on a barrier island ½ mile from the ocean, so I know damp)

We leave our vents cracked about an inch year round. I guess it depends on what kind of winter you have in your location, as JRTJH pointed out if you have a lot of snow it could melt into the trailer.

We don't open the vents even tho we have vent covers. We live in West TX and high winds and blowing dust are a given. With the vents even cracked the entire interior gets covered in dirt. I don't think the OP or most others have that kind of problem. I guess it's just one of the perks we get for living in the middle of a lot of brown farming fields

Left ours all open during winter for years. I think it's important for letting air circulate a bit. Especially on those humid "tweener" days where it gets warm(ish).

I left all 3 of my vent covers open about 1" all the time when in storage but I also have Camco vent covers. If I did not have vent covers iI would not leave roof vents cracked open.

Same here in Az. Dust storms will cause you a LOT of cleanup to do. In summer I have 3-4 5 gal buckets of water in it to keep some humidity in it.
