Using propane in transit

This question has no doubt been asked before but I was unable to find it in this forum. Is it safe or legal to leave the propane on to keep the fridge operating while driving down the road? I don't have 12 volt, only AC or propane. I'm recalling vaguely that it used to be illegal in British Columbia, Canada at one time but don't know if that is still true. Anyone out there know the rules on this?
Thanks in advance.
In the meantime I've just been putting ice packs into the fridge to keep things cold until reaching my destinations.
