Morel mushrooms peak about 3 to 4 weeks after the snow is all gone (that's also about the time that the mosquitoes really get popular). Wild leeks (called Ramps) also sprout about the same time. Morels aren't grown commercially (to my knowledge) and up here, there are people who sell them by the pound. Cost for small, dried ones is about $100 a pound. There's a Morel Festival held in many small towns around Northern Michigan. One of the most "quaint" festivals is in Lewiston. They even have Morel Picking classes. If you decide to "wing it" and just go looking, keep in mind there is a "false morel" that looks very VERY similar and is poisonous.
As for taste, morels stuffed with venison sausage and sharp white cheddar, served with fresh "soft fried" potatoes and wild leeks............. Oh, did you just hear me scream outside for this WHITE STUFF to hurry up and melt??????????????
