I think a water filter is all you should need for an RV, remember your camping after all, and a water softener just seems like over kill to me.

Depending on where you are going, and what you are used to Yes, or NO.

If your used to soft water, and are going to places with hard water, YES, YES. If your used to hard water, don't mind scum and stains from hard water, not an issue.

We have naturally soft water and go places where water is hard a nails. We have a "waterstick" water softener, works fine for us. Not a huge capacity but the price is right, size is right, easy to use, easy to recharge with table salt in about 15 minutes.

when we were in Arizona, southern Utah it was worth it's weight in gold for us.

I have strips to measure hardness when we pull into a site to know if I need to use the softener or not.

The ones that work are basically small versions of a home water softener with the resin pellets and are recharged with either sodium chloride or potasium chloride. Be leary of any other kinds of units that claim to be water softeners.

if you need to watch sodium intake, either recharge with potassium chloride or buy bottled drinking/cooking water.
If you want soft water and go to places with really hard water most of the time, the bigger units like the CW units may be a better unit, they will soften much more water before recharging.

Thanks for the input the waterstick looks like a nice and easy unit. when you spend 8 months out of the year in an rv its more than just camping.
