If you click on the link provided by SAD in his post above and read the "12 Volt Side of Life" attachment, it pretty much explains why there is an advantage of using 2 6v's - especially if you are doing a fair amount of dry camping. In a nutshell and much simplified, 2 6v's will provide you with more amp hours than 2 12's. 6 volt batteries usually have heavier plates and construction. The downside of having 2 6v's is that if one goes bad, you are hooped whereas with 2 12v's and one goes kapput, you can use the remaining 12v to get you out of trouble.
I have used 2 6v's for years and have never run into this situation but it could happen.
