Bottle or Jack Capacity

What size / capacity jack would I need to lift my Cougar (326mks?) to change a tire?

Just drive the good tire onto a block/ramp. That lifts the wheel off the ground you wish to change.

One of these also works well.

But I also carry a bottle jack. As for weight rating, You figure you are only lifting 1/2 the weight of the trailer. So, depending on your trailer, a 2 or 3 ton jack would work. Bottle jacks are cheap though. I think I have a 5 ton for my 8000 lb 5er.

One other thing to consider is axle height... when the tire is flat. My bottle jack is just tall enough to sit on a 2X8 board and fit under the axle with the flat. I think going with a 10 or 12 ton jack may be too tall.

good point about the axle being lower when tire is flat...I tried one of the drive up block things that Camper World sells on the last flat and the tire wasn't lifted high enough to come off...had to get road side assistance (guy with a jack).

The jack that came with your truck should do it, mine does.

Tire changing is on page #23 of this owner's manual.

If you jack on the spring perch instead of the frame, you are only compressing the spring, not lifting the trailer (and you are not damaging the axle in any manner).

If you combine the bottle jacking event with this versatile device, the process is even simpler:

I would get a 4-6 ton jack for a slight overkill factor.
