Campgrounds in Michigan

Been a camper for my entire life but just last year bought my first travel trailer. A 25' Passport, that we love! We have done many state parks but are looking for suggestions for full hook up parks. We are a family of three, 8 year old daughter. Trying to avoid the open field parking lot experience

I posted information about a couple of our favorite full hook-up RV parks in MI there.

My favorites (fellow Michigander)... Hoeft State Park in Rogers City, Aloha State Park just south of Cheboygan. Rogers City is a family favorite - we go at least twice a year. They actually just renovated the play area, so its very nice. Right on Lake Huron with sandy beach and small dunes. TONS of biking trails. 11 mile paved bike trail into town or 7 miles north to 40 mile point light house. Mature treed campground, rarely busy.
Aloha has less tree's...think beautiful golf course with some trees. Lots of level sites, very spread out campground with lake views (Mullet Lake). Aloha has a great Halloween themed weekend the first weekend in October - very fun for kids.
I also like Mitchell State Park in Cadillac and the Yogi Bear Jellystone's in both Grayling and Indian River have provided some great memories for our young daughters.

Sorry - missed the part about the full hook ups. White River RV park over on the west side was nice with full hook ups available - the Yogi Bears both have full as well.

If you want Michigan State Parks with full hook ups there's not much to choose from.
There's Sterling State Park in Monroe, Michigan right on Lake Erie. Paved roads- paved sites - large lots- huge recreation area- bike trails- etc..

Further North there's Hardwick Pines State Park just North of Graying, Michigan. Again paved roads- paved sites- miles of paved bike trails- wild turkeys galore there. Plus you hear the Coyotes at night.
Great canoeing on the Ausable River.
Happy trails,

South Higgins Lake also has some full hookup sites, but they are usually hard to get without reservations. Actually, almost all the state park campground sites are booked weeks and/or months in advance, especially those with attractions that are popular.

Holland State park has full hookup at the Beach campground. The reservations are very hard to get, even for the electric sites. We have stayed at Timberridge in Traverse City, although the park is not paved, it does have a nice pool and kids activities.

We have never stayed at White River, but have visited and are not impressed. The pool area is not very nice, and I don't think the seasonal sites are very well kept. While many people seem to recommend this park, we will not be staying there.

We are primarily State Park campers and love Ludington, Mears, PJ Hoffmaster, and Holland state parks. Traverse City SP and Aloha SP are also very nice. We are going to try Brimley State Park this summer, our first camping trip to the UP. Our kids have always enjoyed the Explorer programs offered at the State Parks, which offer crafts, and educational activities for kids. There is a Harvest Festival at both Holland and Hoffmaster as well that are fun. Granted there is only electric hook up, but there is fresh water and a dump station available.

Good luck and have fun camping!!

In my personal experiance, the two best private parks in Michigan are

Silverlake RV resort and campground in Mear Michigan, right at silverlake area.
and
Krystal lake campgraound in vassar michigan.

Great parks, lots to do for youth and adults, great owners and grounds workers, beautifull areas to go check things out.

Cheers

Since you stated full hook-ups and an 8 year old, you might enjoy Duck Creek RV Resort north of Muskegon and right across the road from Michigan Adventure.

Thumbs up Hartwick Pines

We've camped at Hartwick Pines State Park just outside of Grayling. They have full hook-ups and lots of things to do. We are going there again in May. Try it, you'll like it!

We spend all summer at Old Orchard campground near Oscoda and just love it. Great fishing there.

We camped at Algonac State Park a few weeks back. The sites along the river were nice and provided a nice view...but it was a bit chilly and windy. Our site was perfectly level, didn't have to do anything...unsure if they all are like that, but the ones I saw looked pretty good. Not full hook up however.

Talking

There is an awesome private campground in Ortonville called Clearwater. It has full hook up. They also have a nice beach and a little petting zoo, wagon hay rides and themed weekends. We always have a good time!

Agree with Lost; can't beat Old Orchard. Beautiful park; spent a life-time there growing up. Actually did some work there once upon a time. http://www.oscodatownshipmi.gov/1/32...hard_rates.asp

We go to White River in Montague every year, have been going for 11 years. They have full hookups. This year we're also going to Coloma/St Joe KOA and Indian River Campground. I know they both have full hookup, but I've never been to either of those before.

A question though, are you looking for full hookup because you think you'll fill your black water, or do you just want to be able to take showers and wash dishes inside? If it's the latter (like us), some campgrounds have gray water drains on their water/electric sites. All you need is an adapter you can get from walmart for $4 for your sewer cap and a garden hose. I specifically ask campgrounds if they have gray water drains if we aren't getting full hookup.
