For those not familiar with south Texas, the best time to visit Big Bend is early spring, next best time is late fall. Unless you are highly acclimated to extreme heat and low humidity, I personally would not recommend a visit between mid-May and early October. If in doubt, take a practice run to "Burning Man" in Nevada before Big Bend.
Spring is beautiful in Big Bend. Highly recommend it! However, the big event happens on the first weekend of November right outside of Big Bend NP. The Terlingua International Chili Cook-Off. See:
http://www.chili.org/terlingua.html. If you are ready to boondock at a unique event like Terlingua, combine a trip to Big Bend, Terlingua Chili, the Marfa lights, and the observatory at Ft. Davis. It will be a trip to talk about for years!
