Seeing down the sides

My mirrors on my truck are the power extending ones. Its a 2004 GMC 2500HD. I can only see maybe a quarter way down the side of the trailer with them fully extended out. I would like to see all the way down to the bumper like I could when I had a Motor Home.
Any one with a truck like mine have this issue. If so what did you do to fix it?

I have an '05 GMC 2500 with the same type of mirrors. In my opinion, they don't extend out far enough to give me a good view of what is behind me and where they are. I stuck a round convex mirror on each of the mirrors which improved the in-close view but didn't do much in helping overcome the long distance issue.

Other than trying another kind of stick-on, I don't really see a solution to these mirrors. They just don't extend out far enough. I suppose a clamp-on or other similar addition might work but I haven't had much success with those types of extensions --- too much vibration.

If your mirrors do not go out far enough about the only alternative is to add another set of mirrors. I use these and they will definitely go out far enough.

Let me know if you ever find something that works with our style mirrors..

We use CIPA slide on towing mirrors on our F150. I did not opt for the Ford towing mirrors because the truck would not fit through the garage door with that option. The CIPA mirrors slip over the existing mirror snugly, do not vibrate and once the tightening knob is snugged up, there is no vibration, and the mirrors are easily adjusted. My only issue is that they are not electrically operated, so it takes a few tries to get the mirrors adjusted correctly. The nice thing is that once adjusted, you can remove and reinstall them without changing the adjustment.

You might want to check a camping/RV supply house and see if there is a model for your mirror. If there is, you'll gain about 6-8 inches of extra extension on each side. For us, it made a world of difference and they don't look bad on the truck. In fact, when travelling, if we unhook and stay in one place for a few days, I seldom take them off, we kind of get used to the extra vision even when not towing. Now if I could just get that garage door to widen by itself

I dont think any of the slide on mirror extentions will work. As these mirrors on these trucks are huge compared to regular truck mirrors.

I have the same truck and I cannot stand those mirrors when towing. I also bought a small convex stick-on mirror which helps up close as previously mentioned but I still cannot see the rear of trailer.
I might look into those CIPA slide on mirrors. I checked on line and they are available for a 2004 GMC 2500HD.

I had the same mirrors on my truck, I bought a pair of 2006 silverado towing mirrors, as you can see they are much nicer with a spot mirror built in. they are power heated with turn signal and bolt right on. bought them for $300 on ebay and sold my oem mirrors for $500. they stick out about an inch more and I LOVE THEM!!!!!

I love mine, the optional convex mirror is a must!

It took awhile, but I did the same thing. I bought the extending ones, had the computer redone because the original mirrors folded. Hated them. Bought manual extending ones with blinkers and heated like the ones above. Love them...Jim

My Son has a brand new Denali 3500HD DRW. His mirrors also do not quite extend far enough( a huge oversight by GM, on a new HD truck in this day and age.) If you wiggle trailer just a bit going down the road you can see.

On my Dodge , I can not quite see back the awning side to the end but can see back drivers side. Have contemplated adding clearance lights about 2" outboard of rear bumper for night driving.

For the ones that have bought the OE Manuel mirrors for these trucks. Can you actually see to the bumper caps on the trailer? My trailer is 36 feet. How long are the trailers you are pulling? If they will due the trick I am game...

I thought I was fine using my 2005 Silverado mirrors until I read this post! Now, thanks to y'alls help, I realized my mirrors might be a little bit inadequate, and you guys helped me spend a couple hundred bucks to make life better. I purchased mirrors on ebay similar to the ones Maxx1963 showed, and will test them out by towing my 5th wheel today.

You will love them over the accordion style. I have driven semi's for 12 years now and I can't believe GM called the accordion ones "towing mirrors"

x2 on these mirrors. My 04 silverado came with these mirrors as a factory option and the are great. I think they were listed as "camper mirrors". The factory power extending mirrors really aren't that good IMHO. The "camper mirrors" while not power extending do extend, just need to pull them out and the main mirror is power adjustable while the lower wide angle mirror is manually adjustable. And they easily fold flush if needed in parking spaces or for going into the garage.

Why GM thinks the power extending mirrors are towing mirrors is beyond me. The manual "camper mirrors" should be the standard mirrors.

Yessirreee, these mirrors are the bomb! What a difference from the original accordion mirrors. Much better vision and safety. So I just listed my oem mirrors on ebay... I imagine I'll come close to paying off the mirrors I just bought, or maybe even put a little cash in my pocket!

Thanks again to everyone for opening my eyes to what's out there that makes life just a little better!
