Within Limitations

I’m pretty sure I’m good but I figured to have the resident Weight Police double check me. All the numbers seem to agree and I also used a Towing Calculator I found in these forums as well. I don’t Tow/Camp much yet but I do plan on increasing the frequency with time. I did make the Trek from Home (WV) to New Orleans for a Wedding and a Trek to New Jersey for my Daughter’s Wedding last year flawlessly. When I upgraded my previous Coachman to this Trailer I upgraded to the 3/4 Ram - WHAT A DIFFERENCE! The two most outstanding improvements were the Cummins Diesel (POWER) and the Engine Braking Feature. I am using the 12k Equalizer Weight Distribution Anti Sway Hitch, also new when I purchased the Trailer. While I did not transverse the Rockies, the Appalachians do have some ups and downs and at no time did the Truck or myself feel challenged. The Weight Chart was made just before purchasing the Trailer to validate capabilities (full tank of gas and loaded as if I was to be towing). Give it your normal expected criticism, I can take it. By the way I don’t fill my Water Tanks until I reach my destination and empty when leaving, as soon a practical. Thanks

Yes, all of that was with the Factory China Bombs and No TPMS - both of which to be upgraded soon. I did verify tire pressures before starting each day.

Do you know the gvwr of the truck or the gawrs? The sticker shows a payload of 1951 and the weight ticket shows the truck alone?? weighs 8600? What was in the truck? What I'm getting at is if you have a gvw of 10k and the truck weighs 8600 there's only 1400 left. At 12% tongue weight of the 8914 gvw of the trailer that runs about 1070lbs. for the tongue. Then that 1400 starts to look awfully skinny depending on what was in/on the truck....hitch maybe?

The only relative number I see is in the first picture, the 1951 lbs load capacity. That's low for a 3/4 ton. The 2 yr old scale weight is the truck only and most likely empty, not as it would be for camping.

The best thing to do is loading up to go camping and visit the scales. Haven't weighed 3 times and post that info back. There are many, many posts on the forum describing how to weigh your rig.

Sorry, I did leave out some important details. The Truck when weighed was Loaded to what we expected to be Normal for us (the two of us, our two Dogs, and a guesstimate of 4 Cases of Water to simulate other...stuff). The Truck is a 2014 Ram Crew Cab Short Box Laramie, according to Ram having a GVWR OF 10k, Front GAWR 6k, Rear GAWR 6.5k, GCWR of 25k - Those numbers assuming 150# Passengers and 50# for Options/Weights. It also lists Trailer and Equipment Max Weight at 17,160#. I was also Impressed with the Trucks Weight! I had originally thought of getting a 5th Wheel but was turned off to that after realizing the limitations of my (and it appears most) 3/4 Ton Trucks. I would have chosen a 1 Ton in hindsight, but it is what it is.

If that 8600 is the actual, truck only, weight (and the things you listed), then you've got 1400lbs. to play with. From that subtract the tongue weight, 1050 say; hitch - 120lbs = 1250lbs. That leaves 150 of your payload left for jacks/blocks/cribbing/tools and compressor, all of which you need. So you are right at that margin. Post a pic of the gray sticker with your gawrs on it. That will help determine exactly where you are in the scheme of things - the diesel hurts on payload on a 3/4 truck.

Gray Sticker? First I heard that referenced. While you are correct, the Hitch Weight you are assuming would be at “Full” Rated Load in the Rv, which is 1458# of cargo - that seems at least slightly excessive for two people, but definitely something to keep in mind. I was also taken by the Weight Penalty the Diesel option places on the Truck, like I said my initial plan was for a 5th wheel.

Giving/posting the weights of the tow vehicle and omitting the "scale weights" of the trailer and asking for an assessment of whether your "rig weight" is OK is very much like saying "The Saints scored 26 against Green Bay, so who won?"

You've given a part of the vital information, but completely omitted half of what's needed to reach any conclusion....

If you want to know "the whole story" then hitch the trailer, loaded for a trip to the truck, loaded for a trip, tow them to the CAT scale, drive onto the scale pads, front axle on pad 1, rear axle on pad 2 and trailer axles on pad 3. STAY IN THE TRUCK and weigh the rig. Exit the truck, loosen (don't remove) the WD bars on the hitch, get back in the truck and weigh the rig. Pull off the scale, unhitch the trailer LEAVE THE HITCH AND W/D BARS IN THE RECEIVER and drive the truck back onto the scale with front axle on pad 1 and rear axle on pad 2, STAY IN THE TRUCK and get a third weight.

With those weights, we can give you an "exact assessment" of what your rig really weighs and how close/over your GVWR, GCWR, RAWR, FAWR, payload, receiver capacity, trailer tongue weight (both actual and distributed weight) and trailer GVWR, axle ratings (combined, not separate trailer axle weight or ratings).

Without these weights, anything is a "best guess" at what your "honest status" really is....

Gray sticker has the gawr ratings for your truck. Usually right by the yellow/black/white sticker you posted in pic 1. Assuming you are at full load is all one can do if you haven't loaded and scaled. And, 1458 for two folks isn't excessive IMO. Last I scaled we had about 1300 and now we've moved to the 5th so don't know exactly. The diesel takes a big chunk out of payload on any middle sized truck.

I fully intended to do that this year but with all that was going on the Trailer never left it’s resting place, I have actually placed the Cover back on it so it could sleep the off season protected. At this point I guess I’ll get back on this thread next Spring after I make CatScale some monies. It really amazes me the limited capabilities late model Diesel Powered 3/4 Trucks have. They can pull a house but not carry anything worthwhile. Thanks for all for the feedback, I knew it wasn’t going to be exact.
