Cougar tire size

Hi All
I have a 2008 cougar 5th wheel 31 ft. The sticker on the side lists the tires as 225/75r15. The tires on the rv are 225/75r16. I'm ready to replace the tires but looking at Sailun or Maxxis the closest size they have is a 235/80/r16
Has anyone with this year and model put the 235/80r16
on. I only put about 1000 miles a year on them. I'm not sure if I have enough clearance for a bigger tire. The weight of the trailer loaded probably runs 10,500 loaded. I would appreciate any information on them fitting. Tire shop probably would not want to put some on to see if they fit.
And the don't have them in stock.

Thanks

I think that your biggest issue is not going to be tires, but wheels. You'll need to verify the wheel weight/pressure capacity before going to a 12 or 14 ply tire build. Pressures for 10 ply/LRE is 80 PSI, for 12 ply/LRF it's 95 PSI and for 14 ply/LRG it's 110 PSI. Depending on what the previous owner did when he switched from 15" to 16" wheels could put you in a "no win" or even hazardous situation if he "cheaped out" on wheel ratings.

Verify the wheels before proceeding. As for tires, I don't think there is a ST225 75R16 tire manufactured. Apparently your tires are LT, not ST tires?????

What model, make etc. is the trailer? You don't have it in your signature or information page. We might be able to determine something about the tires that way. Those sizes and trailer seem to be in conflict.

I don't know of any ST tire manufacturer that would build a ST225/75R16. However, there is a ST225/90R16 LRD that provides 3200# of load capacity at at 65 PSI.

I seriously doubt that you need 16" tires higher than a LRE. When they get up over 25% in load capacity reserves they become - what I call - bricks.

Just for reference our 2005’Keystone Sprinter HP Copper Canyon 293 FWSLS came stock with ST225/75-15 tires, but they were upgraded to LT235/85-16E tires. Our Copper Canyon has a 12,360# GVWR, so you could depending on the pressure rating of your rims switch to LT tires.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE pay attention to the SPEED RATING of these ST tires on your units!
Most of them have E or G SPEED RATING. That is 45 or 56 MPH MAXIMUM ! If you drive faster than that you will need a better rated tire.

We are changing our new trailer tires to Goodyear Endurance 255/85R16 Load E (4080 lb) with a Speed rating on N (87MPH) as we usually cruise about 70MPH.

Speed is causing the majority of blow outs, not the tires themselves.

Good luck, happy travels !

Where are you getting your information on the ST tire speed ratings?

I should clarify, MOST OEM supplied ST tires.

Look up the rating on the specific tire in question, then reference to a Tire speed rating chart that covers at least from B (31mph) to S (112mph)

LoL, no. That is a separate designator.

ALL tires have a LOAD rating (letter) as well as a SPEED RATING letter designator.

Most look past the speed rating or simply do not know about it.

There are only two ways for a tire manufacturer to mark ST tires with a speed rating. First is the load index followed by a speed letter. Second is the actual marking of the tire with its maximum speed limit. Another option is a completely unmarked tire. When that happens' the tire defaults to 65 MPH (no exceptions). There is no speed letter for 65 MPH and the TRA - who establish speed and load standards - have set 65 MPH for any ST tires not marked by their manufacturer.

Thanks for the clarification.
I agree with all excepting the above statement. Not EXACTLY 65mph but here is a typical chart of accepted ratings for speed (when listed by mfg)

The OP hasn't been on since 9/29 so perhaps all this tire wisdom is going to ground. Hopefully he is reading but just not logging in.

I'm a tire poster. I have extensive files and pictures. Here are two pictures of the current correct way to display ST tire speed ratings.

The Tire and Rim Association are the official standard setters for these ratings. In the past, all ST tires were void of any speed ratings and the TRA established 65 MPH as their maximum speed. About 3-5 years ago the US government tasked the US Customs to insure almost all ST tires from China are marked with speed ratings, OR, pay a substantial tariff. IMO it actually improved the quality of China made tires because they had to go back to the design and insure the testing for higher speeds was accomplished.

Again, I AM NOT DISAGREEING with you. 2015 they required the speed to be displayed (either LETTER or MPH)

I am giving the chart info so that us "laymen" can INTERPRET the speed LETTER rating when the MPH is not displayed. I assumed all can interpret MPH. There are MANY different ST tires and MANY different speed letter ratings.

Just something I felt was important for "non experts" to know before purchasing, IMO.

Your milage may vary.

OK. Chinese made tires are tested for higher speeds... by whom? The Chinese or some US based entity?

If it's a DOT mandate then I'd think it would have to done by a DOT approved lab.

The same way as almost all others, by 3rd party.

Has it got DOT on the sidewall? For it to get there someone in an official capacity said it was tested.
