The "maximum extension" is about 1/8" before the motor bogs down and shears the safety pin or grinds the gears into shreds in one of the upper leg sections.... No, I'm not trying to be a "smarta**" with that answer, but when you go to the end of travel, bad things happen, so you need to stop short of that in both the up and the down position.
Most of us have, after replacing a shear pin, marked the legs about an inch before the max travel on the moving leg. That way, when we get close, we can let off the switch without risking damage to the motor, shear pin or gear sets.
