A/C Freon Charge

I thought I had an A/C problem. It was acting like it needed a charge like the car/truck. I called the dealer and was told it was a sealed system and you can not recharge it. OK so if the compressor or evaporator or something else goes out does this mean a whole new A/C unit?

It's sad to say, but we live in a disposable society. It is most likely cheaper to replace it than it is to have someone repair it. Hourly rate and parts costs are outrageous. .... Hank

If you can detect the leak, it's easy enough fix it, and braze a service port into the suction line to recharge it, but it's only economical feasible if you are doing the work yourself. If it's an easily detectable leak and the unit is relatively new, it may make sense to repair it. At a $100/hr shop rate and the cost of major components, it's better to start with a new unit and a new warranty and go camping. I would probably do a major repair myself because I can buy parts wholesale and have the equipment to do it

Just a thought. Check the manufacturer's warranty. It's possible the compressor is still under warranty. (Not Keystone one year).... Dometic is two year on the whole unit but compressor may be longer.

The problem turned out to me mine as in a power issue. I fix that by running in a dedicated 50 amp line and all is working well now. I just could not believe that you can not service these units.

You can service them. It is just that if you cannot do the work the dealers or service people will charge you too much. For a little more money you can get a new, warrantied unit. JM2¢, Hank

Had our front 13.5 AC fail last year, while still less than a year old. When the tech from CW in Meridian, ID inspected it, he found compressor oil everywhere, so it was not repairable. The Dometic warranty is 2 years, don't think any longer for a compressor. Fortunately, the CW had a new unit on the shelf, got the OK to replace it under warranty, was out of there in about 2 hours.
