Converting U Shape Dinette

When we bought our Springdale 311 RESSR 3 years ago I thought I would like the u shape dinette. After having it for a while we ended up hating it. I decided I was going to change it to a normal booth style dinette. Turned out to be much easier than I thought. It literally took 10 minutes. Removed 23 screws and it was done. I still need to have a new table top made and I'm going to reinstall the trim piece across the back to hide the screw holes. I think we are going to like it a lot better, the table top will be a lot bigger than before.

Sorry this is the only picture I have right now.

tjl, I've been wondering what to do with our U shape. I was going to yank the whole thing out and go with chairs and table, but your idea seems easier and better.

It looks like your cushions were well setup for a standard configuration. Mine has the curved bolsters and the side cushions don't go all the way back – it's the back cushion that goes all the way across.

I got real lucky. They used a standard dinette set farther apart and filled in across the back. All I had to do was remove the cushions and unscrew the frame work. After I have the table top remade we will still be able to use it as a bed too.

Very nice, the U shape seem like they would be great but I guess it is not always the case. Some manufactures are going back to the standard set up.

U or Not, it still seats four. A converted U with a new tabletop gives you just that much more table space. I also have a freestanding IKEA chair on the outside which is where one of us usually sits.

The problem we ran into with the u dinette is the table legs are so close to the end seats you constantly hit your knees on it getting in and out. It's also a pain trying to scoot all the way around to the back when seating 3 or 4 people. With the new set up the legs will be turned 90* and will give you plenty of leg room.

Looks good. Our Hideout has a bench on wheels that you can either put along the wall and have a U-dining layout or it can be moved to the inboard side of the table. Works out quite nicely and gives you the option of having or not having to crawl around to the inside to seat everyone when there is more than four people.

That's a neat feature. I don't think I've ever seen it before.

We did this right after our first trip in the Cougar. A picture is posted in the thread about Dinette Table Mounting Questions. Not sure how to move the picture to this thread. We did leave the curved end pieces in place, as we were not ready to spend the time redoing the cushions yet.
