Move to Texas

If I move to Texas and transfer my truck registration which is a 2011 Dodge 3500 drw slt 4x4 will I have to pay any tax besides the registration fee?
Also I have a cdl class a drivers license. Do I have to take any tests other than an eye test to get a Texas license. Thankx in advance. Brent

No taxes as long as you paid sales/use tax on the truck when you bought it.

CDL should transfer.

Visit the Escapees RV Club website, WWW.Escapees.com, and look for the "Become A Texan" pdf. Admittedly, this is written for those RVers who want to base themselves out of Texas, but it does have some good info for RVers wanting to move to Texas. The pdf is free and you don't have to be a member to view or download it.

Ron

I must apologize, for I have just checked and I was wrong. To access the pdf file actually titled "How To Become A Real Texan", one does have to be a member of the Escapees. However, it is a free, downloadable pdf file. Brent, if you would like a copy of this document, please PM me your email address. This document is usually part of the free information sent out by the Escapees and discusses domicile, driver's license, voting, insurance, real estate ownership, etc. Whether you are interested in being "Texan" or not, if you are thinking of being a "full-timer", it is not bad information to have. For specific Texas Driver's License information: http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/

From one Brent to another:
Most fees are cheaper in Texas. We don't tax possessions like cars, boats, etc. and we ain't got no state income tax. But we DO have real estate property taxes that will choke a horse.
But come on down anyway. Where ya thinking about moving to?

Not being argumentative, but in Texas, we do have a personal property tax that should be collected by the county tax assessor yearly. If you own real estate, it is wrapped up inside that hefty annual bill. If you don't own real estate, for example you rent a house or own a mobile home in a park, then you might get a tax statement from the county. Now, in a RV even long term in a park ... don't know yet. But Denton County is usually on the "tax ball", so I'm sure I'll find out in the next six weeks. In the past when we have rented and owned mobile homes, our personal taxes were around $200 to $400 per year. A lot less than the $6000/year on our last house! When we lived in Wagoner, OK, we owned a city block with a 1000 sq. ft. Jim Walter special ... $99/year in real estate taxes!

Nope.. no property tax on trailers, RV's, boats, cars or pickups... they did away with that many, many years ago... replacing it with a hefty sales/use tax which is collected at the time of sale.

Property tax is on real property i.e. houses, and land unless you're a business and then you get taxed on both inventory and fixtures. Also there is no tax on a rental home or property to the renter, although the owner is certainly taxed.

You are probably correct. I haven't had the personal property tax since 2002 when I switched for the more robust real estate tax. This will be our first year without that hefty tax statement.

However, I don't know of many landlords that don't pass the costs of a rental on to the renters. Only one guy I knew didn't recover his costs and taxes through a monthly payment, but he was renting to his sister and brother-in-law in that deal! The owner/landlord may pay the taxes, but it is the renters that provides the money.

Oh yeah they/I collect it... although I've never seen it itemized as such. It is just the rental fee. I know I don't give my renters a tax bill and I don't know anyone who does. We just rent them a house for X dollars a month
