Using a DVR manually?

From what I've read, 3rd party DVR's like TIVO and the like want to know what service you are using (DirectV, Dish, Cable, etc) during the normal setup.

Most campground are broadcasting a unique set of channels. They are taking the incoming service (sat or cable) and configuring their own set of channels to rebroadcast on cable to the sites.

What I would like to be able to do is purchase a DVR (not from one of the satellite or cable companies) and use it to manually configure so I can record a selected channel or channels from the campground feed.

Most of what we watch/record is from the local channels anyway and dropping the satellite would be a big monthly savings!

Thanks
