Toilet Water Seal

In my past two campers my toilet would allow me to put a layer of water above the flush valve. My new 29rks wont hold water there and drains down. Is that normal, as I liked having water in there for an additional vapor barrier?

Thanks

Spink

Hi Spink! Yes, the toilet should hold water. Put a pair of gloves on and shut the main water off. Take a look and see if the rubber gasket is seated properly and there is no debris on it or on the slide gate. sometimes the gasket can dislodge from its position when cleaning with the toilet brush etc. You could also try some O ring grease to help reseat it if needed. Let us know how you make out.

Toilet Seal

We had this issue on out last trip (Memorial Day). The seal was seated, just did not hold water. I pulled the seal and coated it with Vaseline. Put it back and it works great. I believe it just dried out a little over the winter.

Use plumbers grease, same as o-ring grease, instead of Vaseline, it won't swell up the seal.

Once you have played doctor with the exam gloves and nothing seems wrong and the water still leaks from the valve, it will be much less frustrating to just install a new toilet. I'm willing to bet that the toilet in question is probably a Thetford, and if it is, an upgrade to a Dometic 310 or 320 will solve the problem. We went just past the one year warranty period, had a couple failures with our Thetford, and finally decided to go the Dometic route. Have had no issues since the replacement, and that was in 2013, and we full time
