Checking In from Georgia

Hello from South Georgia.

Had a very eventful two weeks. Picked up the new travel trailer last week with my 2020 GMC 1500 AT4. WOW, what a scarey drive home that was! So this past week picked up the new 2020 Ram 2500. What a truck !!

Taking them both out for the first time on Saturday 10/31/20. Yea I know it's Halloween. But I'm not scared. LOL

Thanks for the welcome everyone! Returned home Monday 11.2.20 from the first trip with the new Cougar TT. Trailer is great and everything worked except for one thing. The electric trailer brakes are not working.

Set the factory installed brake controller gain and the controller showed it was working but no trailer brakes at all. Did the controller / brakes test I researched before leaving the RV park. I set the gain on the controller to 3 then at idle let the truck slowly pull the trailer and then used the manual slide to apply the brakes to the trailer. No brakes at all. Didn't feel any braking action at all.

Apparently the brakes haven't worked since I brought it home. I thought it was me not setting the controller correctly. Anyway, got an appointment with Camping World where I bought the TT in two weeks.

3 probably won't be enough to feel much with that size trailer. Let the dealership do it (I assume they set it up for you). Knowing how a new trailer comes from the factory they need to check the brake adjustments (maybe you could watch that) and assure they are adjusted correctly.....and have the pull the drums to make sure you don't have some "red goo" floating around inside those drums.....

I think it likely that all brake controllers have a little different value for the same amount of pressure on trailer brakes. I have mine set to 5. If you set it towards a more max value and go to stop the brakes will grab. Try setting it to 6 or 7 and see if the brakes grab; you can do it in a parking lot. Work your way down from there.

Howdy!

Yeah that unit is probably a bit much for the 1500. Congrats on new combo!

So I took the TT back to Camping World this morning ref the brakes. First thing the tech does is check my brake controller on my new Ram. He sets the gain to +10 then shows me on his "machine" how the controller on moves the numbered dial about 2 or 3 and says its low voltage.

So I tell him to prove to me the TT brakes actually work. So he pulls out the wire from the breakaway switch. While he is in my truck w it in drive the TT brakes do lock up. So he crawls under the frame to plug the wire back into the switch & says a wire on the switch is actually frayed.

They are ordering a new switch. But i'm thinking it was grounded or shorted out maybe ??

I did the exact same thing with the exact same truck, then got the exact same new truck and it sounds like the same 5th wheel! Also from South Georgia, Darien area!

I had a very similar situation when we purchased a new TT back in July. I had a 2001 Chevy 1500 and everything checked out weight wise but I was nearing maxing the truck out. We made it about 10 miles into our 40 mile trip home and I knew I had problems! The truck started running hot, skipping and all kinds of stuff it had never done before. We stopped several times to check things and let it cool down getting home but I knew the future. Really hadn’t planned to buy a truck for at least 2 years but without it I would have not even chanced pulling it out of my yard! So we started looking and found this used 2500 to get us by. It’s not the truck I would have bought for towing if I would have been making plans for this purchase, but to make our new camper usable it will work for now (as long as gas doesn’t go to $4.00 a gallon no time soon! Hope you have great luck with your new setups and have fun!!
