I switched teams...

My family and I had a pretty good vacation to Myrtle Beach last week. The only issue we had was that for the second vacation in a row, my Ram threw a DEF fault causing me to have to find a dealership open on a Saturday afternoon that could get me right in and had room to park a 38' Fifth Wheel on the lot. Did I mention that I only had 150 miles to do this before my truck went in to limp mode (max of 5mph). Long story short... my computer didn't like my DEF fluid, which was Chrysler fluid purchased at a Ram dealership. The dealership tested my fluid and couldn't find anything wrong. They said that a bulletin came out two days prior to my visit stating that there was going to be a recall on the DEF system for Rams 2013-2015. Ram currently had no details to give or parts available to complete the recall. This dealership reset and flashed my PC wished me luck and sent me on my way. I will say that they did not charge me a cent as they felt that Ram had put me in a bad position. I got home on Wednesday and bought a new SuperDuty on Thursday. I've never been a Ford guy but decided to give it a try as there is a lot of hype and praise right now for the new SD. Fingers crossed that I don't run into any DEF issues with this one. It's a 2017 F-350 Lariat.

By now most members here know I'm a big Ford guy....that being said I only give the other members a hard time about their other brands in good humor. All three brands make fine vehicles, and I hope you enjoy this beast for many, many miles.

Thanks guys! I don't hold anything against Ram. I probably could have bought another Ram and had no issues with it but I was ready to try something new. So far, I'm really happy with the switch. Ford seems to have a lot of this stuff figured out (a lot of innovation in this truck). I look forward to towing the Cougar with it!

Larry, I have the same strange feeling about yours.

Congratulations on the new Ford. Mine is an '11 but so far in 99,000 miles it can do anything I ask of it. The DEF system on Fords (as well as GM) seems to be figured out while Ram (Fiat), according to what I've been reading, is still struggling. I suspect that someone is working on the Ram design as it still is a good vehicle.

Beautiful truck. Although I'm a ram guy, I really like the front grill on the fords. Look awesome! You did good! I had lots of problems with my 2013 Ram CTD's DEF system. After 6 visits back to the dealer, they ended up scrapping all the components to that system and installed a new one. I've got a Ram 3500 dually now - not a single problem.

Congrats. Only one upgrade left, but I understand you have to take baby steps before you're ready for a duramax.

No kidding! I am a Ford guy, however Ford's handling of the HPFP issues are unacceptable. It is also BS that a HPFP failure causes so much damage and costs so much to fix.

I despise Government Motors and can't stand the hideous looks of the Fiats so I stuck with a gasser Super Duty.

Why is it big rigs can run forever, but for some reason these consumer pickups have so many problems with diesel engines?

Big rigs have their share of emission problems too, it's no different. Why do you think Caterpillar got out of the highway truck motors in 07 when the the new emission regs went into place. They knew we weren't ready. I drive a semi and we get tons of check engine lights, faults, and limp mode warnings and actual events.

Change the fuel filters every 2nd or 3rd oil change along with an occasional drain of the frame mounted canister (see the owner's manual) then purchase fuel at a high volume station and you should never have a problem. The gloom and doom folks make pessimism sound good.

The HPFP failures on Ford diesels aren't imaginary, they are quite real. 5 figures to fix, because Ford denies the warranty claim, is very real.

That isn't gloom-and-doom, it's reality. The failures aren't due to water in fuel or some other neglect.

How often do you drain the frame canister? Have you ever had water in it? A friend says he has never had any.

Since both Ford and Chevy use the same pump... Bosch CP4.2 series HPFP I always get a kick out of these type comments...

I drain mine once a month unless I have reason to suspect bad fuel... In two 6.7 Ford diesel trucks in the last 6 years I have yet to find any water either...

I do however faithfully use an additive to boost Cetane and lube the upper cylinders because of the ultra low sulfur fuel and up to 20% Bio we're forced to use in Texas...
