Smokey Mountains
We are planning a trip to the Smoky Mountains in late August. We already have our campground reserved, thanks to tips on this site. We want to know what are the "must see" and "Stay away from" attractions around East Tennessee, Western North Carolina, Virginia. We will be staying all week. Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

May I suggest you consider attending the NASCAR night races just south of Bristol, TN on 18 and 19 August. Friendly people and great racing.

Where will you be staying? If you can ride a bicycle take the opportunity to catch a shuttle to the top and ride down the VA Creeper Trail. You can catch shuttles in Damascus VA or Abingdon VA. Blowing Rock NC and the Biltmore Mansion are pretty cool too. Have a great trip. Remember to have time set aside to relax in the river, pool, lake or whatever too.

Where are you staying and what type of activities do you enjoy?
Agree with the Creeper Trail. There are several nice State/Fed RV parks in the area. If you enjoy hiking, stay in Greyson Highlands Park and hike the local trails....wild ponies and beautiful long range views. You can easily ride the VCT from there.

We have spent a lot of time in that area and could not agree more with all of the above, particularly the Virginia Creeper Trail. A bike AND the ride to the top of the trail rent for $15.00 for the day. Look it up on line and start wherever you like on the trail. And it is all downhill....Sound good to all you old farts?

Smoky Mountains
Thanks for the suggestions. We are staying at Anchor Down in Dandridge, TN. Any suggestions of places to eat would be great too.

Agree with the above. The Creeper Trail for sure. Greyson Highlands too. Ashville NC is a wonderful place to visit. The Barter Theater in Abingdon, VA is also nice, as is historic Abingdon itself. Hungry Mother State Park near Marion VA if you get up that far. Be wary of traffic and camping if you're around Bristol TN during the NASCAR night race week/weekend. Though not as bad as it once was, it can still get pretty crazy.

Here are some good places to eat not too far from Anchor Down. We stayed there last year and will be back again this year. Paula Deans restaurant and store, Bush's baked beans restaurant and visitor center. There's also a steak and seafood place just down the road from the CG that was pretty good. The pool at Anchor Down was very nice and if they still offer the boat ride on Douglass lake, take it. We also did the Alpine coaster and had a blast. Lots to do in Sevierville and Pigeon Forge. Have fun.
